Re: Gaps - Kudos

Nice tourney, good teams, bad field ? we played on a baseball field with a mound and a far away backstop, two years in a row.Maybe they should take a few less teams and keep them on the nice diamonds. But it is a nice tourney with a lot of effort.

Everyone, thanks for the kind comments (well most anyway). This was our 6th year and I think most teams were happy with the accomidations, we do take pride in what we do, our tourney isn't cheap and you deserve the best.

My hat is off to Wilson. The boy puts in many many hours. He makes sure things are in line, operating correctly, and addresses any issues that arise. Yes, he can't do it alone, I guess I put in some hours too :) and the volunteer base we have is second to none when it comes to treating the fans, players, umpires, and coaches with respect they deserve.

With no rain this year, my crews caught up on some much deserve rest from past rain infested games. I was happy they didn't need to break their backs like they did last year.

As for the baseball fields, I am the 1st to recommend we get the **** off of these fields. They are very very hard to prep. They are too hard, too large, and a baseball pitchers mound set at 60' is unacceptable.

We had to use these bball fields as Orange HS was a mess. Trust me, you didn't want to fight this traffic.

We will address the fields we use at our fall meeting. Any other advice/comments are always welcome.

Thank you for your continued patronage.

Mike we had a great time once again and can't wait to come back next year. It would have been nice to have everyone healthy but you have to play the hand your dealt.

Both Olentangy HS fields were in excellent shape and the crews that you had there did an awesome job.

The only recommendation that I would make is that when you have your Fall meeting please discuss the possibility of extending the time limits. Even one hour fifteen minutes or better yet one hour twenty minutes would be awesome. At least for the bracket games. Just a suggestion.

Keep up the great work and kudos to the finalists in each division. I have no doubt that the bulk of the best teams in the state were in attendance at GAPSS this past weekend and it showed.

If the time limit can't be changed, then at least change the routine between innings. Compuware limits infield warm up to 1st inning only, then 1 pitch and throw down to 2nd base after that. This could add some time to the games.

That's what the 18Us were under at OLHS the entire tournament.

I think everyone was....still would be nice to increase the time limits..can really make a difference with such good competition and so many close games. I know both of our losses were by one run...another inning may (or may not) have made the difference. Just food for thought.

Most of our games went the full 7, but it would have been nice to not have to worry about time quite so much.

I would love to extend time limits, at least to 1:15. Five minutes sometimes makes a big difference in games as well. This will be presented to the board, no guarantees, but we will recommend it.

Thanks for the comments, keep them coming!

I know that I allowed five warm-up pitches between innings at all of my games, and some of those games were 18U at Liberty High School. Teams always have the option of taking fewer throws and many did, but they did so at their own discretion, not at my direction.

The reason I allowed this was because we were specifically told that standard ASA rules were in place and the standard rules allow five warm-ups and infield practice, as long as all are completed within one minute.

If umpires were telling you otherwise, that kind of bugs me because they were making it up on their own.

In contrast, this week at the Stingrays tourney, we have been instructed as noted above- three warm-up tosses and infield practice the first inning, one toss and no infield thereafter.

I also worked a couple of games on the Liberty baseball field. Have to admit, I was kind of skeptical at first with that mound in the center of the field! Upon reflection, I can think of no play that was adveresly affected by the field. No balls hit the mound and took funny bounces, no one tripped over the mound, no passed balls or wild pitches resulted in extra bases due to the deeper backstop and no foul fly balls were caught that would have been out of play on a regular softball field.

The potential was there for any of those things to happen, but they never materialized. One of the games was a beautiful 1-0 contest that was perhaps the most enjoyable game I've umpired all year!

Hey Bretman,

I know this was conveyed to ASA and Wharton, but with Wharton being ill, perhaps not every umpire knew about the one pitch per inning after 1st. I think it speeded up the games some, it certainly didn't slow them down.

Thanks for the input on the baseball field. Sounds like a great game, and there were many games that were this close. It is still our intent to shut down baseball fields for GAPSS. We just have to figure out what to do with Orange HS.
