Here's a good one - maybe for blue to explain

My DD, very fast runner, is on third. Wild pitch goes to the backstop and DD breaks home. Ball hits padding at the base of the fence and caroms back to catcher. Close play coming at home. DD dives head first (I know not the smartest thing but she has a bad knee right now and it hurts to slide on it) while catcher tags her. DD is called out but was clearly safe, but that isn't the point of the story.

Could somebody explain to me how, on this play, my DD ends up spiking the home plate umpire in the hand? Looks to me like he was out of position being in the play rather than being in a favorable position to make a call.

Wow. Well, the defense I'll make for the umpire is that he is scrambling to get out of the way, doesn't know which way the ball is going to bounce, and doesn't have much time to move, all while pulling off his mask.

Was he making foot notes on the play at the time? I say he clearly lost his grip.

I guess I would have to know where the umpire was positioned and how he/she got spiked on the hand on a head first slide. For a play at the plate one should be behind the back left corner of the right handed batter's box but if this umpire was uncertain as to where the ball was he/she may have moved from that position to avoid the ball/catcher.

I've done several games over my career as a H.S. Umpire, and I still can't visualized how a "Blue" got spiked from a player sliding in head first :confused: short of him being stepped on while he was lying on the ground.

FASTPITCH! Anything else, And you're playing to SLOW!
