So if you're a slapper.you can start out of the box, hang your leg over the front of the plate git hit by a pitch that looks like it's in the zone, and be given first base?
I be confused, but apparently 3 very one on the Michigan bench was ok with the call.......

You're not permitted to be out of the box, but the umpire simply missed it. Terrible. I just heard Schilling ask how the umps get assigned, which was funny.

The one thing that really bothered me throughout the Series, but especially in the championship game, was all of the hit batters. I saw lots of players crowding the plate and yes, even some getting hit when they appeared to be in the zone, but completely taking away the inside part of the plate for the pitchers. With that being said, the games in the championship series were still low scoring ... I just don't think it adds anything to the game to have so many players getting hit. I know a few years back, the requirement to try to move out of the way of pitches was removed and I understood why, but now it seems to have gone to the other extreme. What's a happy medium?

I think a solution is really pretty simple. The edges of the plate, extended belong to the pitcher. The edges of the batter's box, extended belong to the batter. The space between the edge of the batter's box, extended and the edge of the plate, extended doesn't belong to either one of them. If the batter wants to "crowd", or be across the edge of the batter's box, extended and she gets hit then all she gets is a dead ball, ball because the pitcher didn't throw a strike and the batter wasn't within "her" space. If the pitcher hits the batter and she is within the edges of the batter's box, extended then she deserves first base. Otherwise, it should be a dead ball, ball or a dead ball, strike. Just my opinion.

it got pretty ugly during that game. 9 batters hit? way too many for a championship caliber game.
i've never seen that many hit in one game anywhere! they are definitely crowding the plate, there has to be a happy medium somewhere

It takes away the inside for the pitcher, but when they get six added inches on the outside, it evens out a bit. Batter is still in a worse situation because she has to take the hit : /
But once a pitcher's dad always a pitcher's dad. :D

Unless you're like that clown #17 from Michigan last night. She had an elbow guard that looked like it could withstand a small nuclear explosion. After she got hit FOR THE SECOND TIME last night she slammed her bat down like the pitcher had attacked her. She was extremely well protected and way outside of the batter's box. She did not deserve to be awarded first base.

Lol @ Karen ... yeah, some of those outside pitch calls were great!! When Sarah played, her best pitch was her knuckle change which came in about 40 mph, but she could locate it well and would throw it on any count. If I remember right, the rule about trying to avoid the HBP changed while she was in college, and there was more than a couple of batters who loved to get hit by that pitch and a few who I thought crowded the plate to do just that.

Unfortunately it is working its way into travel ball. Last summer at 18U we saw a few teams who were doing the same thing. I think at least an effort to get out of the way would start to come back if the batter was not able to wear the armor. Not all batters tho who wear the armor are looking to get hit either. It would be nice to see some sort of happy medium.
