I've been messing with RVP on iPad and wanted to toss out some thoughts for discussion about swing video. There is an obvious importance in improving bat speed. Historically, I believe bat speed is measured by radar at contact. But with the ease and convenience of RVP on iPad and smartphones (I have it on Android too), what about using a timing method - like from the ready position (loaded, hands back just before launch) and timing from here to when the bat just reaches the assumed contact point? Since it's about quickness to contact, wouldn't using a "frames to contact" be an extremely accurate determination of bat speed? After all, it is about how fast, efficient and accurate you can get the barrel to the ball. Since the time is displayed in the frame, you get an extremely accurate calculation of speed of the swing. I would think this would eventually make using a radar device obsolete. The same method can be applied to pitchers in timing segments of their mechanics. Pitcher side video could easily be shot at games and the frames counted for ball flight to give a MPH conversion. Just think - debunking all those 60+ 10u pitchers! lol! Thoughts?

Wouldn't video taken at a higher frame rate cause more frames to be present that a video at a slower frame rate?

All cameras take video at a different number of frames per second. The more frames per second the clearer the image when slowed. Since different cameras shoot different fps I thought you might have to factor that in if you are going to base speed off frames.

This is true, however Bretman stated that the FFS was based on 30fps. Many digital cameras run 24fps and digital recorders run either or both 30fps and 60fps.

Seems like a huge variance. Think I will stick to my radar unit. Although not perfect, it dosen,t have has many variables.

I will say this much after receiving a few pm,s If you pitching coaches and pitchers parents that like to thump your chest so much ( and yes fpitchdad this is at you ) would teach your kids to hit their spots. Bat speed wouldent be that much of of an issue now would it.

Well ya know BD, you and all these chest thumping hitting coaches that think all these workouts, all these hitting classes witch I'm sure you take good money from them for, and all your great advice really isn't the reason these kids are hitting any better. You like to think hitters are working so much harder and hitting has caught up to pitching.....got news for ya pal, it hasn't. The only freaking reason hitting has got better in the last 3-5 years is because everybody cried enough (you and all other hitters parents) that the rubber is to close.....waaaa, the rubber is to close, we need more offense in the game....boooohoooo. So now its at 43 feet instead of 40. Pal, this is the only reason hitting is so much better. All this money you people waste on Right View pro isnt why....ITS BECAUSE THE RUBBER IS AT 43....NOT 40. Put the damn rubber back to 40 where it belongs and you will be needing an upgrade on your RVP or Don Slaught on speed dial.......sheeeezzzzzzzzz
