I have always found the "protect the plate" advice misleading. The batter has the bat, be aggressive. I have a different take on 2 strike hitting than you. I do not want hitters to change anything, that's why they practice hitting. I want them to open up the strike zone some, I hate called 3rd strikes. Babe Ruth held 2 world records simultaneously, home runs and strikeouts. Gotta take the good with the bad. I appreciate your philosophy and many use it very successfully.

Chip as I have stated I never found everything in one book...however the Science of Hitting by TSW put it in a nutshell. "Page 65...With two strikes, the advantage turns: you now have to concede to the pitcher. You have to make adjustments. You have to think in terms of making everything quicker." and "How do you do that? You choke up a little bit. You quit trying to pull. You think more about that push swing, that 90-degree impact from the direction of the pitch.....Rod Carew, George Brett, Wade Boggs, Don Mattingly and Pete Rose are probably the most flexible hitters around today."

The attack mode was Merv Retmans idea for a drill, Greg Walker with the Sox's terms it the flat foot drill...the hitter is at toe touch on the inside edge of the lead foot or what is termed eversion and the knee is flexed and the hands are separated. If you are in the correct position you can swing without having to make any additional movements other than lowering the elbow into the slot as the lead elbow is making a good first move forward.

The kids took the drill and on their own came up with a different way to approach two strike hitting and have made it work. Boulders daughter lead the Dayton High School for average as a freshman last year I think.

Crystl chooses to dig in and think the pitcher can not get one by her so there are differences of opinions...however the kids came up with it and it was not forced on them in my opinion. The more they can see it, they will feel it and then they fix it.

Sounds great, if the players like it that is all that really matters, honestly.

Hi SB

I actually believe hip rotation should start right after toe touch. I believe the planting of the heel comes from the combination of linear weight shift and hip rotation. If people think differently that's okay with me, but if one closely watches videos of a great hitter like Crystl Bustos they will see that the hip rotation does indeed start after toe touch and before heel plant.

Len

Len I have a super slow mo swing of CB hitting a 308.5 foot shot and the heel is down just as the hip starts to engage and it is an inside pitch and no I will not post it.

We feel if the hip starts too soon the front foot spins out and the heel moves rearward because it was not planted soon enough...try stepping into a wall and not getting the heel down prior to starting the hip and you may feel it or see it in my opinion.

CB and I started using a 5 gallon bucket with about 1/2 of the bucket filled with concrete so it will not move. The lead foot will slide down the bucket to heel plant and the front foot leg will firm up at an angle. If the heel plants and the leg was flexed you will see the hips almost pop into that strong position....all I am saying is try it first for yourself.

Come on Howard, how do you know it wasn't really a 305.2 foot shot. Sounds a little like a fishing story to me.

I guess if YOU did not watch the Gold Medal game YOU two would not know especially since you do not work with my mi hermana!

However it does not surprise me either....in my opinion!

Len, Sorry I disagree with you. Watched too many swings in slow motion of both elite softball and MLB . As Howard posted it appears you gain power and speed on the BSI meter. Today you can test your ideas because of computers. Just like not lining up the knuckles. If you can gain 3 to 5 on BSI then some of these new ideas work. Like any one in business , if you are not keeping up with the changes you are going to be left behind or out of business.

Don't get your panties in bunch, I'm not saying she did not do it. Actually that is probably one of her shorter shots. I just thought what Ringer said was funny. Get a sense of humor. Did no one-else find that post funny?

Hitter..........
I thought this discussion was going pretty well alot of good info about the timing of the toe touch, heal plant and the hips.
Then after one joke about the 300' homer you go after people and act like your the only person that has ever met anyone.

there are alot of different ideas out there and there will always be difference of opionions, but lets not think that anyone is the holy grail because of who they have met

I still say the hips start before planting the heel.

Here's Josh Hamilton....an elite MLB hitter.

Here's Crystl Bustos....an elite fastpitch hitter.

Here's Michelle Smith...another elite fastpitch hitter. Hips start at frame 53 and heel plant is frame 58.

Here's David Ortiz....another elite MLB hitter.

Here's Caitlyn Benyi....another elite fastpitch hitter
http://www.chrisoleary.com/projects...stPitchSoftball_CaitlinBenyi_1B_2005_001.html

Here's a whole web page of hitters Bonds, Ruth, Aaron, and A-Rod all starting hip rotation before heel plant.

And of course Ted Williams, the Splendid Splinter

All hitters above are starting hip rotation before heel plant but see what you want to see and believe what you want to believe.....it's okay.

Lenski,

I agree...Candrea says in RVP that rotation should begin sometime between toe touch and heel plant.

You are a hitting expert and you and I both know that Bustos is the best female hitter ever. We both know she could use a wood bat and out hit everyone. Using her as a example is unfair and makes little sense.

These ideas are hardly new, they may be new to some of us but hardly new. The ability to see frame by frame and compare via RVP is revolutionary. Don has revolutionized the way hitters swings are analyzed and compared, he did not invent a new way to hit.
