Horrible Westerville Tournament

I cant believe what has been going on in the Westerville WARCAT tournament this weekend. Alot of teams have been completely hosed. I have been to some joke tournaments alot but this is embarrasing for a large suburb like this.

There was alot of rain in the Columbus area overnight and the fields did take a beating but how this thing is being handled is awful and tempers are really flaring out there.

Early morning they cancelled the whole days games. Didnt bother to work the fields with a delay they just cancelled the whole day. I went to several of the fields and had they been worked they could have been ready in couple hours. One of the fields had standing water they hadnt even squeegeed off.

The forcast said after 10am it would get warm and sunny.
It was hot and sunny the whole rest of the day!

There were baseball games going on all over the city that afternoon. I saw baseball at middle school and elementary school fields without any problems and these are just basic dirt fields.
Just down the road Chillcothe had a full baseball tournament no problem.
So why were Westervilles highschools and their best park unable to play on them all day. Nobody can believe it!

Instead of a full day of games Sunday they changed it to single elimination. So a 3 or 4 game guarantee tournament was reduced to possibly 1 game.

There was no offer to refund or discount anything. The only thing they are doing is if you lose your first game you can come back to the same joke of a tournament next year with a partial credit.

They even managed to put two teams from the same town playing each other in the first game. That was nice of them. What if they travelled together now they have to wait all day for their rides. Any tournament of director should avoid something like that if at all possible just because is right thing to do. There is no seeding so whats the big deal.

I heard from a coach who swore he witnessed it that a coach from a team that travelled a long ways complained they told him his team just made a charitable donation to Westerville!

I am stunned actually - Westerville is a class town. I lived there myself for several years. We have hosted a mens fastpitch tournament there without issues.

I can handle the usual stuff - poor planning, umpires missing, wrong times posted etc.

Cancelling a tournament that could have and should have been played because you just dont feel like working the fields and making no concessions to the teams that travelled to your tournament is just plain horrible.

In the unplayable weather I ended up watching couple boys baseball rec games at poor old elementary school field 5 min from Westerville then went to the pool and got a sunburn.

What are you doing Westerville?

Will avoid this tournament in the future.

Hhhmmmm....

I was asked to umpire in this one, but was down in Cincinnati watching the Reds play the Red Sox. The weather was great and their field was playable! ?;D

Westerville did get a lot of rain- a freakishly large downpour that dumped almost an inch of rain, then hours of steady rain after that. With it clearing out in the morning, and a sunny warm day ahead, it seems like you could work the fields and get the tournament going with a few hours delay.

Depending on what fields you were on (Hoff, Metzger, Westerville North?), the tournament might have been at the mercy of the Westerville Parks and Rec Department. They control all maintenance and use of their city fields and, in that respect, what they say goes. If they say no games, then the Tournament Director has his hands tied.

I understand that they were at the mercy of the Parks & Rec and what they say goes, but no one was notified of the cacellations at Hoff until after 8am. I personally spoke to a Parks & rec person and he told me the decision was made to cancel at 6:30am. Why wasn't anyone advised right away so we could have stopped our players and parents from driving in many cases very long distances. We will have to seriously consider returning to this tournament next year.

Happened to us in Toledo at the Farley, too. All Friday games and Saturday am games cancelled. No one even touched the fields until noon on Saturday. Could have been easily playable way before then. No reworking of the pools or schedule either. No one got the same amount of games in. We got 4 out of the 8 we were supposed to have.

This makes me appreciate the heroic efforts of the Marion Rebellion even more. Those people busted their *** to get the games played. I saw an early AM Sat cell phone pic of a volunteer standing thigh high in water while installing an industrial pump to clear the field. Yes the games were delayed but when it was time to play ball...WE DID.

I have come to really appreciate those who go the last mile to get the games in and the Rebellion crew have my respect. Remeber that next year when finalizing your schedule. Marion is a great place to play.

Buckeye Heat 93 was at Capitol City last weekend, but I want to echo Johnnies comment on the Marion tournament. Our team had played there the last two years and it is a great tournment with the hardest-working staff in the galaxy.

Congrats on your win there last weekend, Johnnies. You had to have beaten some great teams.

For the Farley - there was a great deal of reworking on the schedule (12 hours on Saturday). Many teams had the same number of games, many had 5 games through the weekend. There was more than one complex being used on Saturday and Sunday, field conditions vary from location to location depending on the grounds and crews involved.

Games from the first two morning rounds at CYO were rescheduled, not cancelled. The grounds crew at CYO worked their fannies off all day Friday, trying to get at least one field in playable condition. One game started - only to be stopped again for rain. They were also at it again at 5:30 Saturday morning, working hard to get the fields ready to play. Hats off to the crews - they are awesome!

We're all at the mercy of the weather when participating in outdoor sports and activities. Hopefully people can try to understand that there are often times more factors involved than just a few puddles on a field. Most TD's that I know of don't have the freedom to make the call about a fields playability, they're not only at the mercy of the weather, but also at the facility managements decisions.

The frustration felt by the teams and fans is felt equally by the tournament management.

I understand that many tournaments are at the mercy of the weather and the grounds crew, but I did not feel they went the extra mile to accomodate teams in Toledo. The attitude was kind of "oh well, nothing we can do about it", instead of " we're making every effort to get your games in". Parents and siblings were made to pay full admission for the weekend and only given 2, 50 minute games on Saturday and 2 games on Sunday. We were waiting to start our first game Saturday afternoon, while 2 other teams were having a coin flip to seewhich would play their 3rd game!

Marion had a fantastic crew going the extra mile...one even said "sorry" for the dew that would be on the field on Sunday's first game!
this was one group of dedicated individuals that did evrything in their power to run a tourney and get the games in...right on!

We got ZERO games as a 14U team at Farley. We paid 2 nights at our hotel and got ZERO games. The 10's and 12's played multiple games.

Teams at the Sparta Summer Shootout got in 7 to 10 games. ?Only the Saturday games were shortened by 10 minutes each. ?The grounds crew did a fantastic job all weekend !

The Marion Rebellion tournament got hammered by 7" of rain in a little over a week including a drencher on Friday night. ?I saw a pic sent via cell ?phone of a volunteer in the wee hours on Fri PM/Sat AM setting up an industrial sized pump ?in the middle of a field. ?The water was half way up to his knee!!!!!

They changed the start time from 10am Sat to 4PM Sat. ?The games were shortened from 1:20 to 1:00 drop dead.

The games ALL started at 4:00 and by the end of the day Sunday, ALL games were played and ended pretty much on time on Sunday, with the championship games going a full 7. ?When I saw the pic, I thought "NO WAY" we will play Saturday. ?A friend told me... hold off on your prediction. ?The Rebellion crew worked THROUGH the night and by 4:00 the next day - all games were played. ?I would have bet my house that would never happen. ?I will NEVER doubt the staff at the Marion Rebellion tournament which is a Pony qualifier.

Next year, where teams are making their schedules, remember the tournaments that bust their unmentionables to do right by the girls. ?Mark this one down as a given. ?I am proud that my team play in this venue. ?I have the upmost respect and appreciation for Brian and his Rebellion staff. ?Hats off to a classy and caring group of people.

I agree some tournament directors are at the mercy of the Parks and Rec Dept. In Wilmington, it is "MY" discretion on the tournament and let me tell you this... every effort will be taken to play the games at whatever hour in the night ( we have lights) and whatever it takes to get back on schedule for Sunday morning. I have two skids of diamond dry at my disposal.
Teams and parents spend money to come to Wilmington... and we play ball no matter the time of day or night when the fields are safe for the girls after working them after a rain.

You are at a tournament... come prepared to play and be prepared for rain delays and late night games.
