How long should we wait for team roster to fill

DD is on a team with good coaches and for the most part good players. The problem is the team still needs 3 to complete the roster. I fear the team may fold. We want to honor our commitment and not put the coaches or other players in a bad situation but we do not want to get stuck without a team.

I would suggest that you sit with the coaches and share your concerns with them. Then come up with a date together with them that will be the cut-off date. If that date arrives and the team is not complete then you will be moving on and looking for a new team. In my opinion this would be fair to both sides. I would think that a date of Jan. 1 would be sufficient.

Needing 3 would scare me a bit. How many are the coaches wanting to roster? I guess if it were 12 total, needing 3 wouldn't be too bad. 11 makes it a little scarier. If the team needs 3 to be able to put 9 on the field, then I think I would be looking for another team. I would hope that a coach who only has 7 or less at this point, would seriously consider letting the girls go find another team, rather than try to keep it together for his ego. Also, if you look at all the posts looking for players, it seems pretty clear there are more teams than there are players.

Good luck to you. Making the right decision is often difficult and gut wrenching.

yes how many are on team now.

If 9 or more you are fine.
8 and it is a little testy
7 and under.......I would have pulled plug by now.

If you have enough bodies to field a team you can get through a season.

What age group? What positions? Those are the two questions that are important. If you're looking for 3 pitchers, run away. If you're looking for position players then you have plenty of time if the rest of the team is solid. JMHO

What age group? @ 10's finding 3 good players by summer will be no problem.

Like Uber said at 10u there are so many people who don't even realize that tryouts are in the fall for next year amd come spring they will be looking for a team.

This is a 12u team with 8 on roster including strong pitching.

I don't know... I would be seriously considering looking. My big fear would be that the coach will start filling with "just anybody". 8 is a pretty iffy number.

At 12u, solid pitching will go a long way. Think of it this way- if you bail, then the team has to search for 4. You only need one more to field a team, and at 12u, there is NO DOUBT that you will be able to get a few more good players by the spring.
I'm sure everyone of these girls, including your DD, can think of a girl who could probably play on the team, but hasn't made that commitment yet to travel ball. I say stick with the team and have every girl do some homework and recruit, recruit, recruit!

last time I checked there were aprox 15 , 12u teams looking for 1 to 2 players I dont know if those teams fill those spots ???? Something got to give, maybe a couple teams might need to fold and help find homes for those players. Im curious too, how long do you hold out and wait for your team to find 2 or 3 girls???

Depends on what part of the state your in and how many current 12u teams are looking in your area. You only need 1 more to field a team and 2 to put your team at 10. I would say all good travel players are already on teams and what is left is either girls passed over, girls that were on the fence about playing travel and rec players deciding they want to play at the next level and parents not realizing that tryouts were in August. Now this isn't saying that any of these girls left over are not good players, as a girld passed over may have only try'd out for 1 team, it just that it depends on the the position the team is looking to fill and if those particular candidates are out there.

As noted in the posts from last year, it depends some on exactly how many they have on the team (and have made at least a deposit), how many pitchers they need, and what age group they are. I have seen some teams advertise for 1-2, when they really need 3-4. A team of 12-U or older that doesn't have 9 by now is in borderline trouble in my mind, with 10 being far preferable. You always have to figure that at least one player will either quit, get hurt, move or something. If a friend came to me whose daughter was on a team with 8 or less at this point, I would tell them to start looking for another team. That small of a roster almost assures that someone is going to go find another team. Just my opinion ...

I agree with you. I also think that if you're a coach and ur looking for a number one pitcher/catcher and several other players maybe it's time to fold. There are sooo many 12u teams it's almost impossible for anyone to get 1 kid let alone 3, if teams continue to hold on... I see some big name teams that are still searching for 1, while kids are held hostage basically on a team that is doomed... I don't get it. Besides why are there so many 12u teams? I'm fairly new to this. Is it the year where everyone starts up a team to give there daughters playing time? Or is it that most girls decide by 14 what sport they really want and stop playing?

Would be interesting if last years posters replied to how their situations played out last year.

RenMad ... there definitely is a thinning of the ranks around the ages of 14-15. At that point, the girls are no longer doing it because the parents want them to, some girls decide they have other interests (other sports, working, hanging out with friends, boys), and still others figure out that they either aren't good enough or not willing to work hard enough to play enough to make it worth their while. It's funny ... you often see the parents when the girls are that age start blaming the coaches or politics for their daughters not playing a lot, while the girls themselves usually know darn well that they just aren't as good or don't want to work as hard as those who are.

Eight at this juncture? I'd say thanks but no thanks as they haven't kept their commitment to you in fielding a team. Even if I lost money I'd be looking for somewhere stable by now.
