how long should you expect to hear back from the coaches at tryouts

On the flip side, if your dd goes to a tryout & they might be interested in her, but still have more tryouts & she knows this isn't the one for her, let the coach know so he isn't overlooking other prospects thinking your kid is interested. It goes both ways.

So HOW do you tell someone they are cut or didn't make the team? How do you start that conversation?

'With a brief how are you doing and introduction as to who I am....I start mine by saying we have fully rostered our team and happy to have evaluated their DD... continue then by asking if they have questions and how can I help. We also recommend teams or coaches to call in some cases. All depends upon the conversation. All calls I made today just wanted to get off the phone quickly. We will discuss their tryout performance and as always critique. I know Kavin has even had girls attend his practices so they get better for the following year. The personal touch or response is always a must for us even though we struggled with it in the past... not anymore. It's mandatory for our coaches to contact in some way. I prefer via phone so they get the help or answers to their questions.

I have been on the try-out road for 8 years and 3 daughters. Most of the try-outs have been a no call if you didn't make it. I have found in the last 2 years, most coaches are up front with the time frame and "if you don't hear from me by..." statements. I guess I can't blame them after being at some of the 40-50 girls at try-outs!!!

While its a very difficult thing to do, and can be time-consuming if you do have a lot of girls try out, I think it's something the coaches have to do. Anyone that came to a 2-3 hour tryout, deserves at least a phone call and a chance to ask questions. I've made 20of these calls myself and they're no fun, but I do think most people appreciate the fact that you called. A few are clearly upset, but I certainly understand that.

We tried out for a team...won't say who...it DD had a very good tryout. The coach was very honest that she was somewhat position specific and he was solid there. He offered us to come back to a second tryout if we chose and we accepted. Another tryout came up at the same time, so I called him to explain that we needed to go to the other tryout. He was good with that! (PS CLASS ACT FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO KNOW WHO I AM TALKING ABOUT, JUST DON'T TELL HIM I SAID SO!!)

Turns out my daughter made a different team at her favorite position. It all worked out, no hard feelings anywhere!

I know, I know Koombyah and all that, but the phone calls go both ways people...
