How many girls should be on a team

Our daughter recently commited as the #13 player of an already 12 roster team last week .
Are we worried about playing time ? No we are not ,...she has commited to the team and has the same opportunity to make a positive impact ,...just as the other twelve has.

Instead of worrying about a place on the bench ,...start focusing on how you can contribute to the team and up your stock .
I also agree that every player should expect to sit out at some point ,..and no matter the reason ,..should respectfully play their role on the team.

Rod, would your opinion change if you were told that there were now 16 players on the team. I can possibly see 13 "AT THE VERY MOST" but 15, 16 ????? Use your head. 14, 15 or more girls is just unacceptable. The team fees, gas prices, lodging, food, drinks, ect., is pushing the limit in this shambles of an economy that we have, so parents have to almost insist that a team is reasonable about actual on field time. If parents accept 14, 15, or more girls as acceptable then whats next ? 21,24,28 players on 1 roster ??? Just because a coach or organization wants a tour bus full of players on 1 team doesn't make it right, or fair to the players and parents who flip the bill. $400 or $500 team fees plus the other costs is way to much for super large rosters when the girls might just get 30 mins a weekend playing time.

age group has a lot to do with this as well.

Just try having an 11 player roster at 18u. With graduations and grad parties, work, etc. it is only asking for trouble. Last year, with 12 on the roster, we didnt have a full team until after the 4th of july. so much for the season.

I agree with davidanderson. At 18 age group it would be tough with 11. But at the 12 and under or 14 and under age groups the 12 players is just what the doctor ordered. Maybe 13 at the very most.

Look,.......... the truth is most teams do not have 14,15,or 16 players on there roster .
And to answer your question ,....if my daughters role was to play on a lrg rostered team then so be it .If she only pitched every third game then that would be her role.

Sounds like your bitter ,...for what ever reason Im not sure ,..but its much better to let it go and press on for excellence .

It doesn't really matter how many are on your roster, its what is sitting on your bench during a tournament. ?I have been to a lot of tourneys and never in my life have I ever seen more than 3-4 girls on the bench. ?I know of no coach in the world that wants more than 3-4 girls sitting on the bench at one time. ?Any more than that would cause turmoil and turn a 12U or 14U coach into a babysitter and not a coach!! ?

rod03...are you not new to travel ball? your opinion would change after a summer watching girls sit.

i just found out my dd will be playing for a team that has 15 players (after paying down payment) i have concerns, but it's too late now, if i would of known beforehand how many were going to be on roster she would not be playing for the team. dd played before with 14 on a team, makes parents mad when their dd's are sitting and what is bad is the not only do the parents get mad at coaches but then they turn on the other girls that play most of the time. it's not the girls fault they play, but in the long run it's the girl/girls parents who have to listen to the putdowns.

oh well, you have to make the best of what you got at that moment. :)

So, We are in agreement that 12 is the perfect number, 13 at the very most, and 14,15,16 is just unacceptable. If you have not yet paid for 2006 season and you find out that your team has more than 13 then run the other way unless you want to look like one of those baboons at the zoo with the raw butt from sitting all summer. LOL. ;D

? ? ?This is our first DD in travel ball,...but we have gone through 4 boys with sports . Im also a coach ,....so I know about the roster problems that occur .
? ? ?As a coach I have always been fair about playing time .

? There are several slots the girls fall into,......#1 being a superior player with quick developleing ?skill levels.

?#2 being a solid player that shows great potential ,....and is not quite there yet ,..but will finish out with hard work and game experience.

Then theres #3 ?,..this young lady may work hard but always seems to strruggle in her developement. ?
? All these young ladies are no doubt awesome individuals that deserve a chance to show themselves valuble .

?All I want as a parent is ,..the coach to give my DD a chance to prove herself ,...when a coach gives her that chance,... then she controlls her own destiny . At some point a coach rests on a solid line up and some girls become role players .

? ? ? Just because we pay the fee does'nt give us the right to cause contention amongst ?coaches and girls ,..when we become unhappy .
? If your unhappy about your daughters playing situation ,...go to the coach with some dignity and talk things over ,..don't sit at home and bash the coach and other families.
? ?Remember,... travel ball is an excellerated level of competitive play. Make sure your DD can hold here own in the midst of this battle . Make sure shes more than ready ,..because thats what it takes. ? ?
? ? ?Again ,.....am I concerned about my DDs playing time ,...not a bit ,....she has worked hard to make herself a valuble impact player and I feel shes ready to step in and contribute to her team at this excellerated level. Watch out for big #00 .
? ?
? ? All I have to say is ,...if you guys are crying about this now ,...your going to be real hard to live with come July !
? ?
? ? Good luck and be happy !

Still comes down to a case by case, team by team situation, there is no magic number. If the coach promised you no more then 12 when you tried out, the a promise has been broken. If you didn't ask the question at tryouts well...... Either way, if you are not happy with the situation of the number of players, now is the time to make a decision. Discuss the situation with the coach, make a decision and move forward either with the team, or look for a new one. Don't wait until your DD has made friends, worked on a position, and will be unhappy to leave. Unless you are the exceptional individual (and I know I am not one of those) your displeasure will rub off on those around you (child, other parents). While this may be looked at as breaking a commitment, this is still the time to do something. When unhappy parents/players stay in a situation there are times that the player gets the reputation of creating problems, or worse, getting the player is not worth the hassle of putting up with the PITA parents.
