How many realistic pitches do you need?

I am just curious as to how many pitches you realisticly need. Every tryout that we went to said we needed more pitches. We throw three and hit our spots pretty well. If you watched the world series they mostly threw 2-3 pitches ( I realize they throw 70 mph).

First, I'm pretty sure it is your DD throws those pitches, not both of you. Second, what age group is she? Third, what pitches does she reliably throw? My 13yo does pretty well with three pitches and a little bit of variation on a couple of them. That is all she throws. That got her a few really good offers this year.

I would say 4 pitches but the most important thing is location!!

I don't know how many but if you can hit your spots with fastball and can throw a great change-up at will, you can be devastating.

it's funny how a lot of parents and girls seem to think the more pitches they have, the better pitcher they are. Hitting spots is key and if you have a fastball and nasty change up and can master those 2 and hit spots at will; i will take you over just about any player that throws 4-5 different average pitches. JMHO

with the strike zone up to the umpire. and more girls hitting well, at least 4 pitches. not all of them might work in a game. nice to have other options. especially if ump isn't giving pitcher a certain part of the plate.

I would say a pitcher need to throw atleast 3 off speed pitches plus FB... BUT.... You need to be able to hit your spots. If a pitcher can throw hard but can not hit her spots it doesn't really matter what she throws because no one knows where they are going anyways :) Just saying
I know coaches at the older ages that throw nothing but junk to keep the batter off balance and rarely throw a fb

I agree. Unless they are flame throwers, pitchers will rarely throw a fastball at 16U and above.

Change, Rise, drop, fastball and be able to hit all spots would be the 4 I would pick.

What do you consider being successful? My DD was never a flame thrower (55-58) and didn't get a huge amount of strike outs (4 or 5 a game), but she would get ground ball and fly ball outs all day long. She survived with a FB (almost never threw it), Curve, Screw, Rise and Drop/curve (money pitch). She could never really master her change, tried three different ones over the years. She could throw it for a strike about 50% of the time, but just showing it kept the hitter guessing.

What about the age of the pitcher? At 9/10U, how many pitches should they have? At 11/12U? Etc. My dd has two and has been pitching since April. FB is good. Working on change up. Change up speed is good, hitting the spot no so much.

DD is 16U. Has five pitches. Doesn't throw a FB except for practice to work on speed for her other pitches. Usually, one or two of those pitches are "off on any given game. And, it does vary which pitches those are. Some hitters are more adept at hitting a curve than a screw and vice-versa. Probably, the most deceptive pitch is the rise and the knuckle change up.

DD is 9u, she throws 5 pitches, she throws a bouncer to the catcher, an extreme rise over the catchers head, an inside hit batter pitch, right down the middle pitch, and baskins robbins ball, that one is named after the ice cream truck in the parking lot behind the back stop she hits.;&

at 10u if your DD can throw a FB with decent speed 35-40 mph and a change up and can hit spots, she is doing very well!

Which pitches do you consider to be offspeed? Curves and screws are not offspeed pitches in softball like they are in baseball.
