How many tryouts does your daughter go to ? One, Two or many more ?

Did you ever get invited to play for more than one team ?

If your picked for the team is it normal to wait a few weeks until other tryouts are over before you accept/decline ?

Do most coaches spend a few days analyzing their tryout results ?

Do they let you know immediately if you make the team ?

is there standard procedure during most tryouts ?

If you cant tell were going to our first tryouts this coming weekend. There's 3/4 local teams all having tryouts over the next couple of weeks. She has been practicing with Team A for a few weeks. I feel good about the coaches and see some improvements already. Anyone that invites a stranger to practice due to wanting to teach kids is a big plus in my book. My only concern is it may be a one year deal(2009) with no team to move into in 2010. My daughter will be 12 while most team is 11 and wouldnt be moving up with her. Team B has a few of her friends on it(half her basketball team), solid coaching and looks solid for the future atleast for now. Teams C/D , just local teams that would be 3rd/4th choice since i dont know much about coaches although they have good reputations.

My gut feeling says go to all of them, atleast to get exposure and learn what happens at tryouts.

Would this be frowned upon ? Is it bad to not commit until other tryouts are completed ?

Deep down inside im hoping she finds a spot on Team A.

What have you seen in the past ?

Comming from your side of town I guess the most important question you should ask yourself is ....What does my kid want out of softball?

Pretty much all the eastside teams are pretty week when it comes to the top ten list of teams posted on OFC. So if your kid is looking for college exposure and she is extremely talented she should be looking for a team that fields extremely talented kids. Now if shes just looking to kill a summer and she likes to play a little softball. Im sure Central Park, Tri County, and the rest of the eastside fundraising orgs. would just love to have her.

The thing you have to realize is most coaches really have no qualifications to be teaching fastpitch softball. So if its instruction you seek find a team that holds plenty of drill orentatied pratices. Not just gets togather to hit the cages and warm the pitchers up. Its been DADDYS experience that one on one workouts three times a week is much better than bad pratcices two time a week.

I hope that helps and since DADDY DICE has been away for three weeks........Here's a PIC!!!!!

I could not agree more, especially for pitching and hitting. Mindless reps of bad mechanics only serves to further ingrain bad mechanics. "Go get some swings in the cages" can sometimes be the worst advice you can take.

East - Hopefully, you and your DD have done some research and have an idea of which team your DD would LIKE to play for. Once you've done that research, make a prioritized list, and start at THE TOP. DO NOT skip a team tryout because your DD thinks she's not good enough, or doesn't have a snowball's chance... you'll never know unless you try!!

Go to as many tryouts as possible, but start with her FIRST choice teams and work down to the less desirable teams.

She may just get an offer "on the spot". If this is a team high on her list, well there you go! If it's a team further down the list, be completely honest and tell the coach you are exploring all her options and need a week or so to do that. If he passes you up or gets an attitude, you probably wouldn't be happy there anyway! Coaches with integrity understand "the system", and won't give you grief. Sometimes it's a tough decision, but there's always next year...

So if your kid is looking for college exposure and she is extremely talented

Well, considering she is just going into the 6th grade, i dont think she has even given college a thought yet, but i will have to ask her. Talent wise, she got bored playing slowpitch and decided to move to fastpitch on her own. In her slowpitch league she was well respected, especially for her age as she could play anotehr year at that level but she herself needs more of a challenge.

So if its instruction you seek find a team that holds plenty of drill orentatied pratices.

Interesting enough, she has been practicing with a team that has done nothing but throwing, catching drills, getting to the basics and after a month there is a difference. Just last night playing catch with the 11 year old, our 17 year old says "wow, you never threw that hard when we played catch". She was viewed as being "a good player" but in actuality, i wasnt a coach and wasnt correcting things that needed to be corrected or she could have been "great". Im learning form and execution mean alot !

Thanks for all the tips and words of experience !!!!!

PS Daddy......I can do without the picture unless you have one of momma dice..... :)

A great question. My daughter tried out for three teams last year. She made it for more than one. It helps to have an ideal which one you really want to play for. In my daughter's case, she made it for the team she wanted to be a part of, and they have had a good year. She was also new to travel ball and has had a nice first year. We hope to be as lucky next year.
