first time posting and have read plenty. we teach the same load approach that
hitter does. after loading and going to connection, i have read that the knob stays inside the ball. does he teach this by maintaining the box or triangle. i see many of our girls trying to push to hit. like hitting with there arms in trying to keep the knob inside. they will get a weaker hit ball. thanks.

If you think there is a lane between your toes and the ball the hands will be inside the path of the ball and the lane is established by hitting the ball up the middle first to gain an insight of what controls our bat.

To establish this we like to place the tee forward of home plate about two to three inches and in the middle and we line up off the back corner of home plate the length of a bat. Difficult to establish bat control without having a place to set up that would make hitting a ball off the tee in a fixed position repeatable in my opinion.

We load, separate to toe touch ( some will call it stretching the box however the hands are what Don Slaught refers to as inside the elbows. That is the top hand, if taken off the bat and then making a fist, could be directed forward and hit the bicep and that hand would be inside the elbow.

In my opinion if the box is stretched too far the hands go down and lower too much for fast pitch. The reasoning is the strike zone and possibility of the rise ball, so the hands are usually the bottom of the bottom hand at the top of the shoulder or the top hand thumb near or at the ear hole.

During the matrix drill, we say separate to toe touch and do what Coach Enquist terms the Elvis drill, by lowering the front foot heel and lifting the back foot heel and as we say Elvis drives the hips and the shoulders are slave to its movement and the elbows and shoulders start to turn slightly and are in the lane. This action was started by the hitters instincts to swing at the ball and the back elbow beginning to lower and the lead elbow making what Don terms a good first move of about two to four inches forward and up like the elbow is going up a ramp. This is why we start the lead arm elbow down verses up. Try holding onto the wrist as they move forward from an up position and from a lower position to feel the difference.

We teach as the rear elbow comes down the shoulders because of the Elvis move are turning and the tilting is started and the shoulders are doing what? Directing the knob of the bat inside the path of the ball based on the rotation of the hips and using the belly button as an indicator of how far we should rotate the hips based on the depth in box of the pitch and location as to middle, outside and then inside as this is how we teach how to hit the ball.

The triangle would be determined by the back elbow staying some what stacked as the lead elbow is picking up and the hips will turn based on the pitched ball depth in box. The bat is released by the un hinging of the wrist releasing the barrel to the ball with the elbow above the plane of the pitch and the hands below the elbow and the barrel below the hands at a specified angle depending on the instincts of the hitter to adjust the angle of the bat.

In my opinion the pushing of the hands comes from the back elbow not lowering and the tilt and turn of the shoulders. Not uncommon for most females as they are taught by males who do not understand the difference in the female shoulder being narrower and rounded and that there is laxity in the shoulder and the carrying angle has 4 to 10 degrees of elbow defection outward towards the thumb.

Make sure the grip in the top hand is done so there is a slight mis alignment of the top hand finger knuckle alignment towards the wedding band if you are a right handed hitter. The top hand index finger looks like a hook and the bat is in the finger pad area of the top hand. We tie a pony tail type rubber band on the index finger of the top hand and keep the bat out the finger side of the knot.

Welcome...:D

thank you for the reply. i live in tuscaloosa al. we have a high school coach who helps our travel team with hitting. his approach is very similar to what you teach. i feel that most of the girls are trying to get to contact by using their arms. i feel we need to do more with our back hip getting into proper position.
this really helped me. thanks again for the response.

Usually the problem is most males do not understand the females do not do a weight shift in throwing or hitting because the glutes do not fire the knees in a female....Google it yourself and most just keep yelling at them verses getting them to feel it....however you must find what works well for teaching them to see it, feel it and fix it.

Most of the males can not even get them to throw correctly let alone teach them to hit....watch them on a field while they are throwing, even at the college level. :D

For first time kids we use a 2x4 and a block of wood to demonstrate what leverage is and then grip and how we grip the bat will depend on how we apply leverage to hit the ball. We do it with our head up and then down so they can feel the difference. Then they hold the bat in the back of the hand verses in the index finger pad or in front of the hand to again feel the difference.

Then we show them how to use a $7 dollar hammer vertically and then horizontally and then do the face the fire drill and after 15 to 20 reps we introduce the hand over drill and the begin to feel the momentum and are trying to keep their head steady while their body is moving under them.

They are stepping to hit and then we go to throwing and the foot work for doing grounders. The pattern is actually on the floor so they have a template to follow .

I had a girl here the other night who goes to a hitting instructor and did not have any momentum. After showing her what I just described she hit a ball and you could hear the crack of the bat hitting the ball squarely. She stepped back and exclaimed Mom I just broke my bat! I had to laugh out loud and tell her it is supposed to sound that way.

The look on her face was priceless and I thought the Mom was going to cry. :D

Do you have a picture of the rubber band/index finger placement?

It really is. We are heading to Florida tomorrow and I'm printing what Hitter said out and taking it with me. I'm going to keep reading it over and over until I get it. At the park between games or at the pool. Until I really understand it.

The only bad part of this discussion is that my daughter is in Texas and Hitter is in Ohio. How does a guy gain access to Hitter's Camp?

Howard and I have found a device that even works better than the pony tail tie. It is called the bat jack. Batjack.com is the site. With it you cannot cheat, like a kid can with the pony tail tie. I carry a bunch of the hair ties at every camp, clinic. You would be surprised at all the things we have figured out over the years to help kids learn.
Here are some of the simple things we use that I will let Howard explain when he gets time.

1. 1/2 bottle of water.
2. A wooden box
3. Swimming pool noodle
4. A device that Dana Elliott started and it helps maintain the box. Refined by Garry and others.
5. Hair Ties
6. Hammer
