If it?s not a base hit, what is it?

Scenario : ASA - Runner at third, batter hits a ground ball that is fielded by the pitcher and the pitcher decides NOT to throw her out at first base even though she could have done so with ordinary effort in time to make an out. Rule is pretty clear that it is not a base hit but how should it be scored?

I am thinking it can or should be scored a few ways:

- FC fielders choice
- sacrafice
- Error on Pitcher

I can not think of a good argument other than if it was my daughter as to how that could be a hit (she legged it out for an infield single....which if you knew my DD you would know she has maybe 1 in 6 years of ball).

It depends if she did not throw it anywhere it is defensive indifference in my mind. Which I think is a way to cover up for mental errors. For a fielders choice or error to be charged the pitcher needs to throw the ball somewhere and from the above she did not.

OP didn't really say what the pitcher did instead of throwing the ball to 1B. Presumably she either made a play on the runner on 3B or simply checked her, which would be scored FC.

ATEC Fielder's Choice:

3. when a ball is put in play where a play is made on any lead runner and an out occurs, or an out would have occurred had no error taken place, or the runner is safe, but the batter would have been out had the initial play been made at first,

4. when a runner is checked and no throw is made ...,

NCAA Fielder's Choice:
14.7.1.4 When a runner is checked and no throw or a late throw is made, but the runner would have been out had the initial play gone to first base.

Note: Defensive indifference is scored as FC.

Pitcher fielded the ball, only 1 out, checked the runner at third who dove back to the base (so didn't make any throw) and batter safe at 1st.

I agree with fielders choice. Cannot reward batter with a hit because she really didnt do her job.

Seen this many times this year in HS ball. I scored it as a FC.
