Imagine - Better Ohio Softball

Was looking at the Jersey intensity and saw they have joined the Premier Girls Fastpitch (PGF). I looked at the other teams that are associated and they are all of the heavy hitters. I'm not coaching this year but why haven't I heard of this. Why are there no Ohio teams?

Interesting stuff

Guess I see the point of their program but more cost and very "clear" insurance and background check costs in addition to all the ASA stuff we already have is costly. I guess one would have to use PGF and ASA to satisfy both sanctioning bodies.

This should pump up some further discussion.

I've posted several times on the advantages for some players in going to a DIII school, not the least of which is the faculty-student ratio and access to state of the art science facilities. And if the player has a great academic record, the fact that she will also contribute to the softball team might just raise the level of academic aid.

2010 was their first year, and they seem to be Cali-based. I've heard that there are a few Ohio organizations considering playing PGF, but as of right now there are only a couple of qualifiers in neighboring states (IN and PA) so you better be willing to travel....

PS - Looks like the Lasers may have had a team make the trip at 16U last year.

CGS, you don't have to convince me; my daughter is committed to a DIII school.

But it looks like you and I have to convert about 75% of OFC-ers to our way of thinking :)

With that comment, I guess it's time for me to add my thoughts.

Why does everyone get so hung up on playing for a D1 school? Is that really a realistic goal? Look at how many high school seniors are playing in a given year. Now count how few D1 schools are in Ohio. Figure maybe 20 on each roster - with, for argumentive purposes, maybe 5 openings each year for incoming freshmen. Do the math; the chances of anyone getting into a D1 program are very low.

What's wrong with DII, DIII, NAIA? Is D1 an ego thing?

I admire any player for having the desire to play ball in college. Any college. But every one acts like if you're not going D1, you're wasting your time.

I dont believe I said anyone was wasting their time if they were searching for something other than a D1 scholie. I Think its great if any kid goes on to play ball at the college level no matter what level they may play at.

Also keep in mind there are different levels of D1, My comment was about kids searching for that Major D1 spot...... although those spots may be rare as you stated, Ohio does offer the opportunity for kids to play at the mid major level. In Ohio alone in the Horizon and Mac there were 32 Freshman signed in the early signing period this last November, and thats just Ohio. and that dosent count UD as I couldent find any mumbers on them.

Place in that the late signing period and the number of mid major in Ohio alone could reach 50 kids. There is opportunity in this state to play at the D1 Level If that is what they seek.

If they seek that elusive spot on a Major D1 program then yes I applaud them for going out of state to find it, There are kids that do seek that level, as there are kids that do not. I do not believe its as ego driven as it is kids that want to be at that level and are supported by their parents and coaches to reach their goals.

D1 isnt for everyone, but those that seek it and fit into it will hopefully find it

Not sure if Ohio really has a Gold team committed to playing exclusively GOLD events on a National GOLD circuit. Premiere is providing the seperation of the upper echelon and those who like to dabble in/with the upper echelon. GOLD fbecame watered down and several other sanctioning challenges helped motivate the west to get Premier started.

Kind of like when we all get ticked off at an ASA "A" tourney and we see half the teams are "B" level teams as the tourney director wanted to make some dough.

The real GOLD Clubs had enough and are jumping ship to Premiere.

Lasers were given an invitation by PGF, but they did not make the trip.

SoCal - Lasers Black is planning on trying to qualify for 14u - so if you want to demonstrate some Cali influence we would attend with an 'at large' invitation for sure. :)

I wish I had some influence because I'd love to see your team out here. I can confidently say your team would enjoy playing in SoCal more than Midland and there will be far more college coaches here. Colleges will have to make decisions about which sites to cover with PGF going the same week as USA/ASA A Nats. I believe they'll cut back on ASA 14U to cover both PGF and ASA 16U.

PGF had to give out a lot of invitations last year to get it going, but they've expanded the qualifiers and cut back on the invitations this year. PGF has said their 14U tournament will consist of 48 teams and the qualifiers page shows 48 berths up for grabs.

I see the closest PGF qualifiers, Indy and PA, are the same weekends as the ASA State and Dayton Metro tournaments. There is another unscheduled 14U East qualifier that you might want to inquire about. Hopefully it will either work better in your schedule or, if PGF isn't close to nailing down a site, you can talk PGF into awarding some berths based on an existing highly-regarded tournament in Ohio.

Note: It looks like Miami Valley Xpress 14U is entering the Indy qualifier.
