she doesn't go because the times conflict.

it's all about team isn't it, will the team pay for college?
if you are the coach, do you take players 25-30 on the food chain out
or just 1-5?
Look reality is unless you DD is in the top 10% of her class and scores a 27 or better on her ACT test it will be hard to get 20% of college tuition paid for, they seldom to never get anymore then that. Sorry I'm all about the team concept. It works

Been our experience so far that although the HS coaches are limited to contact, they are still privy to who attends conditioning and who doesn't.........if the athlete is not involved in winter sport which prohibits them from attending conditioning, then the coach obviously has to determine the level of commitment to the program.......doesn't matter if you attend a private workout or not.......he/she will undoubtedly already know about the athlete if their past accolades are strong........if not...then in my opinion the athlete needs to take advantage of every edge they can to show what they think they have, and to make sure the coach knows they are there and vying for an open spot on varsity. It is a chance that one takes......betting the house that the private training will have the athlete advanced to the point that there really is no other choice or.............the level of the athlete is on par with another athlete who has put their face in front of the coach......who will the coach choose if limited positions are available at the varsity level. Given the politics of HS ball, the athlete needs any edge they can get to get to where they want to be.

Not that it is anyones business, but grades are not and will not be an issue.
I played in college on a scholarship, so I know what it takes.
It isn't a given, but she would love the chance and is trying.
She is well aware of the obstacles, and is going full head of steam to reach her goal.

Go to conditioning. You will wish she went and if she is providing leadership really wished she had gone. School ball season is way to short. Enjoy your high school years because it gets a lot of attention for your community. Wait a minute, it gets a tons harder after high school if she is lucky enough to make a college team because you will have no interaction after that and your private instruction will mean nothing. Let her learn how to manage her time and efforts. Don't short your kid's high school years. She will reflect upon them for many years afterwards. I have recently gone through this and going through it again. High School activities and ball is important. Let them be kids.

Thanks for your opinion, but we choose to work hard and get better. High School voluntary conditioning when not doing professional led conditioning and drilling. March 1st, high school begins.
Grades, no problem, have to deal with coach on their own, but they will be hard pressed to sit someone who will probably be the top offensive and defensive player on the team, and she earned it!

You are kidding right....best player always plays in high school........in the top programs that year after year go deep in the playoffs ....yes........in the programs that linger in mediocrity.....the best player does not always play....just a fact......

So why post / ask? You obviously already made up your mind what you intend to do. Your opinion is the only correct one and your kid is the most intelligent kid and best softball player on her HS team. Ahhh yes, it's the HS coaches that have the ego problems.... sheesh.

This topic needs to go away. Nothing constructive going on here. Just someone with an axe to grind and furthering the wedge between travel and hs ball. Let your daughters enjoy softball wherever it may be. Stay out of their way. You may think you're helping but............

I'm going to summarize, and then close this thread because it doesn't appear that anything constructive will come of it. (That and rants that go on past a couple of posts don't work for me.)

1) Bottom line is that all off season conditioning, open gyms, etc. can't be made mandatory in any fashion. Any attempt to make them mandatory can be reported up through the chain Coach-AD-Principal-Board-OHSAA.

2) If you aren't going to take a complaint up the chain, ranting on here about it won't change a thing and is likely to get on people's nerves.

3) If the time for open gyms, etc. is a problem, talk to the coach and explain that because your DD can't make them you've got her seeing......

4) Private instruction can produce, but does not guarantee, better results than group instruction, so you'd better be able to prove to the coach that you've been working when the season starts.
