Is there a RULE against...

Is there a rule that can be applied regarding the third base coach calling out pitch location based on where the catcher sets up or is this totally within the rules? Does the ump have any say in this matter if a request is made by the defensive team regarding this?

Nothing in the rulebook against it.

It is a sign of pure desperation though.

Wow...just seems so bush league, doesn't it? Don't know if the ump can do anything about this.

Not right at any level as far as I'm concerned, but out of curiosity...what age are we talking here?

Len, I would have so used that to mess with him. He/she can only call it out so fast and still communicate to his/her hitter. I would setup then move right as the pitchers hands come together. Or even better, setup, move, move, move, move.... LoL Just to let the coach feel like a butt.

WOW... A little story on this when my DD played we were in a tourney here in toledo losing by like 6 or 7 runs she was pitching and after the catcher gave her sign and move outside the plate the 3rd base coached yell " here come the change " My DD proceed to throw a fastball at the batter just missing her..I was not happy with her at the time because someone could have gotten hurt but I think that is VERY bush leauge for a coach to yell that out...jmo

I vote that we kick his butt behind the bus after the game.........
If my DD was pitching when a 3rd base coach was doing something like this....she just might throw a pitch into his Dugout.....she's a red head.....lol

soap in a sock... let him feel that bush league beating...

Finally, I thought I was the only one who wanted kick some A$$.
A few more meetings in the parking lot might lead to less bush league coaching.
Name the team , the coach deserves it.

Don't give the target until the last instant. Most pitchers don't look at it anyway.

Slight hijack here: watched a HS game today where the third base coach appeared to tell the third base player to quit watching him while he was giving signs. Thought that was pretty amusing. I mean, he was right to be concerned because I know for a fact that the player is very good at picking signs, but the notion that she wasn't allowed to watch him give the signs . . .:D Hopefully he was just teasing her.

Just to play devils advocate here....

If you noticed a batter giving away that they were going to bunt would you holler that out? I see/hear it all the time. What's the difference?

As a coach NO as a player YES....jmho...I do not belive in yelling out in the middle of play when I notice something as a coach in that situation. What I try to do is first teach the girls to recognize it on there own...if they notice a hitter trying to bunt down a specific base or steal their signs or pick up on anything then I think as players they can use it to their advantage in the game (still do not think anyone should be yelling out pitches)...If there is something that I notice or I can figure out the signs. I use in between innings to point it out or practice to teach that part of the mental game.

The mental part in my opinion is the most important part of this game, teaching the kids to read a recognize on thier own is HUGE...

Just curious... if this were a college game, would you feel the same? Do you feel different courtesies and "unspoken rules" apply at different age and competition levels? If so, why?

CGS-- Mine used to do that all the time anytime she played third.. would stare right at them and picked a few of them... Then anytime she batted and the signals came from the third base side bucket coaches and her batting lefty picked a few of those as well. Being a catcher made it a little easier for her to guess....

Players giving location from the bases one thing, coaches never, parents behind the fence even worse..... Better yet, Mom or Dad go hit for your baby tooo

Just play the damn game, never have and never will worry about the other teams signs. Very rarely have my dd's talked about other teams signs, and when they do, I tell them to worry about their team. Have seen a few threads in the past where grown men are all happy they could steal the signs of another 10u coach. Kind of makes me want to puke. Have your kids go out and play the game with a little pride and integrity and just maybe the other team will too and who says you have to stoop to another sorry teams tactics. Man this touches a nerve with me as you can tell. :(
