"Just Showcasing" at College Clinics

My daughter is a senior in college and generally has at least one good story a year from the clinics and camps the softball team puts on each year. Thought this one might be worth passing on. At the start of the clinic, each of the pitchers attending is asked, "What do you want to work on?" This past weekend, the response of one of the pitchers was "Oh, I'm just here to showcase." First off, that is not big news. Just about everyone there was there to showcase! Also, my daughter and the pitching coach had been told before the clinic to check out this pitcher because she was about 6' tall. What this pitcher failed to realize is that she was not only there to showcase her pitching prowess -- she was there to showcase your personality and coachability. After this pitcher said she was only there to "showcase", both my daughter and the pitching coach still did what they could to check out this pitcher. They offered suggestions as to what she might do to improve this or that. The pitcher was polite in her response, but did not try any of their suggestions, and she was by no means a finished product. At 6', she did have some real potential, but at the end of the day, the head coach did not receive a glowing report from his pitching coach or #1 pitcher as to the smarts or coachability of this prospect. The moral of the story: Realize you don't go to a college clinic or camp just to showcase your prowess as a softball player.

I agree. This reminds me of that dreaded job interview question: "Tell me your greatest weakness".

Of course "I have no weaknesses" is the wrong answer....
