Last year (jv) bases loaded down 1, 2 outs #8 hitter up, ump says she got hit by the ball. She says it didn't hit me, so I call her down and she goes coach that ball didn't hit me and I went to confusion today. So I said blue it didn't hit her and to his credit he said ok, it's a ball then.

Even got me thinking deeper.... Friendlies or a daring TD to try with buy in from all teams involved... Call it something like Its about the kids, or something like that....

No umpires, coin toss for home team, then first close call goes to visitors, then alternates... We used to do it as kids, then even work league.... You can't complain, just go with the close call alternate.....
catchers call strikes and balls, you'd be surprised how they narrow the zone on their own pitchers...

Could be fun just watching the kids with no adults, all the flex, Dp etc could be handled by the coaches,

Wishful Thinking though......;)

When I was a kid, we played organized ball during the Spring and then a Parks & Rec league in the Summer. The P&R league formed teams by neighborhood. They provided a hat, t-shirt, schedule and 1 umpire for midday, midweek games. It was semi-organized sandlot ball with the kids running the teams themselves - no coaches, just a few moms watching.

Kids learn a lot about negotiation and compromise when they play pick-up games by themselves. Teams uneven? They'll adjust them. They just want to play, so they'll do whatever is necessary to keep the game going.

Had a similar situation this weekend. One of our girls was up to bat. pitched ball bounces up and taps her on the thigh i belive. Ump awards her base and she looks up and says thats ok it hit the plate first. We were in a tie game with runners on. You have to be proud of her honesty.

Had the opposite from honest happen with my DD. During a tournament in which she was struggling at the plate, she was NAILED on the forearm but the umpire didn't make the call. I sure did from the coaches box and showed the umpire the stitches. He asked her if she got hit and she lowered her head and said, "Yeah". I asked her why she didn't just tear out of the box for first when she got hit and she said, "I can't fix my bat if I don't hit, Dad!" I love that little girl.

But it's still a base award, even if the pitch bounced on the ground first. Touching the ground, or the the plate, doesn't negate this being a hit batter.

Thanks for the info bretman. I have had umpires say both ways and had decided just not to argue. I learn something everyday here on the OFC.

Only a very inexperienced umpire would not know that first base is awarded on a pitch that hits the ground or plate first and then hits the batter ... that has always been a rule in fastpitch and in baseball as far as I can remember. Maybe they were confused with slowpitch?

I have seen this several times at TB tournaments as well as rec ball. I can understand confusion at the rec level with inexperianced umps. The ump that made this call sunday is a seasoned ump. I have seen him call many games. As for myself I have been so confused by the issue I have just gone with whatever they say and not questioned it. But as i said ,now I am wiser.

Our rec league used to use "modified" OHSAA / NFHS rules and when it came to HBP it stated the batter must make an attempt to avoid getting hit. I was umping a game and a pitched ball literally rolled to this batter (slowly) and hit her foot. Coach said, "take your base". I said "coach, she has to at least try to get out of the way - BALL".

No one argued.
