I have to agree with ump. We've taught our daughter the same thing - in softball and in other sports. Work your butt off to be ready when you're given the opportunity to play. That lesson has been more important in other sports than it has been in softball. In volleyball, she didn't get much playing time early in the season, but dad and I worked with her at home (thank goodness for the 16ft. ceiling in the family room. LOL) to help her improve her skills. We never bashed her coach or other players and guess what...halfway through the season she was getting more and more playing time and eventually she earned a starting position. She plays 3 different positions pretty well in softball so she usually gets a fair amount of playing time there, but I've been on the receiving end of parents harping about how their kid is better than so and so adn it's not fair, etc. and by the end of the season, the whiny parents and the whiny kid are ready to quit (what whiny parents don't know is that whiny kid is always whining to coaches about not feeling well, joints are sore, etc. then wonders why she doesn't start a lot of games).
O.k. stepping down from soapbox...
