Should have been an immediate dead ball. The umpire may then place runners on whichever base he judges they would have reached had the ball not become stuck in his equipment.
If the runner was stealing on the pitch, that would probably be second base- treat is as a wild pitch/passed ball.
If she only took off after a delay, after seeing the ball was stuck, probably keep her on first.
Definitly rare. I think the runner was stealing anyway. It all ended up working out probably the way it should. It was just funny to see the ump just stand there with the ball stuck between his mask and chest protector. I mean he just stood there like a tree waiting for our catcher to find the ball.
