As an umpire (and player and coach) I agree with the concept of the protest.

Remember, a protest can NEVER be made over a judgement call. Fair or foul, ball or a strike, safe or out are all, for the most part, judgement calls.

Only misapplications of a rule can be protested. I always want the correct rule applied to any game situation. If it's not, a protest is the only course of action to get things corrected.

Competent, experienced, well-trained officals will all but eliminate the need for any protest to ever be filed. Until we can ensure that type official is calling every game, the protest will always serve a useful purpose.

Again, please note the difference between a legal protest, as outlined in the rule books, as opposed to a coach who questions every call or disagrees with judgement calls.

A legal "protest" is not the same thing as complaining, whining, arguing, yelling, belly-aching, show-boating, badgering....
