I know this subject has been brought up many times but I cannot find the old post.
CAN A 7TH GRADER PLAY WITH HER SUMMER TEAM DURING HER SCHOOL TEAM SEASON IF IT DOES NOT INTERFERE WITH SCHOOL BALL?
ARE THE 7TH GRADERS COVERED UNDER OHSAA RULES?

If it is an OHSAA sanctioned MS team then she cannot participate without penalty.

I have a 7th grader in school ball and she cannot play with us until the second or third week of May. My understanding is that if a player is in school ball they cannot do both, school ball has to finish before they can resume with their travel team.

Coach Paul Is correct. 4.3 A student may not play in a non-interscholastic fast pitch softball contest, game or scrimmage, while a member of the school fast pitch squad, untll the student's school team has completed its schedule.

Apr. 30 Non-Interscholastic Competition No Longer Permitted

From the 2007 OHSAA softball calender. What does this mean?

4.9) Individual Non-Interscholastic Competition Dates:
A fast pitch softball athlete who has not participated for a school team in fast pitch softball that season must cease non-interscholastic fast pitch softball competition four weeks (28 days) prior to the Monday of the State Tournaments in fast pitch softball in order to be eligible for OHSAA Tournament competition provided applicable Bylaws and Regulations have been followed.
Date: April 30, 2007.

Let's say that there is a girl who is placed on a school team during the season and that girl was also playing travel ball. ?The girl must have stopped playing travel ball 28 days prior to the state high school tournaments in order to be eligible for the tournaments. ?That date is April 30, 2007. ?Once she joins the high school team, she of course cannot play travel ball the rest of the high school season.

suppose there is a team that is made up of 7th and 8th graders that is coached by someone not connected with the school and they play during the High School season, does that affect the 8th graders eligibility for High School ball the next year.

If you are talking about a team similar to a travel team in which none of the girls or coaches play for a school sanctioned team, then they do not lose any eligibility. If they play on a travel team and a school sanctioned team at the same time, then the penalty is:

10-4-1 The maximum penalty for violation of this bylaw for any member of a school squad, excepting a senior, shall be ineligibility in that sport for the remainder of the season or the ensuing season. If a senior, the maximum penalty shall be ineligibility for all interscholastic athletics the remainder of the school year.

Or are you are talking about a "Club" team, one not sanctioned by a school board, comprised of 7th and/or 8th graders, playing a high school varsity, JV or 9th grade sanctioned team?

Section 1. Contests with Non-Member Schools and Non-Interscholastic Teams
9-1-1 Members of the Association shall observe all Ohio eligibility and contest rules in contests with non-member and non-interscholastic teams.

The way I read that is that a High School sanctioned team cannot practice, scrimmage, or play a non-interscholastic team unless all members of the non-interscholastic team meet eligibility requirements. It doesn't mention any penalties for the non-interscholastic players (they cannot enforce rules on non-members) but the school sanctioned team would be in deep manure. So I doubt if a school would even consider it.

Please explain once more. if a little lady in the middle school grades played on a High School team for one game or the whole season, who would be punished the little lady that probably didn't know the rules or the school that let her play or the school that played against her, Enquirer minds want to know.

Here is a quote from a different - but similar thread. I don't see anything about the team being sanctioned - perhaps someone else can comment on that.

If you do it, the player loses eligibility. A player has only eight semesters (4years) of eligibility. The play will lose one year of eligibilty.

From the OHSAA Bylaws:

Quote:
4-2-3 A student shall become eligible for high school athletics when the student attains the fifteenth birthday before August 1, or when the student attains ninth grade standing. The student is eligible at the school where the student is expected to enroll at the ninth grade level.

Quote:
Section 1. Application of Bylaws and Sports Regulations

1-1-1 The bylaws and sports regulations apply to all participants in interscholastic athletic contests involving students in grades seven through twelve and include matters of eligibility, contracts, qualifications, responsibility and behavior of various personnel.

1-1-2 Students enrolled below the seventh grade are ineligible for participation in interscholastic athletics. Students enrolled in grades 7 or 8 are ineligible for interscholastic competition on the same squad with students in grade 9 or higher. Exception ? A student who attains the age of 15 prior to August 1 is eligible for interscholastic athletics only at the high school level not to exceed eight semesters.

1-1-3 These bylaws cannot be waived, modified or amended by mutual consent between or among contesting schools.

Some MS teams aren't really school teams (OHSAA sanctioned) but are club teams organized to fill the MS gap because the school board won't or can't fund the program.

Bear, Great Point !! Anthony Wayne has a Jr. High program in name only. In Northwest Ohio and Southern Michigan, Martin Drain runs a huge Jr. High program and I'm sure many of these programs have absolutely no affiliation with their Jr. High. In Anthony Wayne's case, the team is run administratively through the Summer program.(A.W.A.B.S.A.) Travel players on this team would be able to attend practices and tournaments with their travel team during the Jr. High season.

It is probably worth noting that there are very few unsanctioned high school teams, so those teams that allow any middle schooler to play would also be in violation.

So, to the point, even though it may not be illegal for the middle schooler to play up, it could be illegal for the team she is playing on.

I can't specifically find the penalty for the high school team. Can anyone help?

The penalty could fall under using an ineligible player. So forfiets and suspensions would be the penalty.

Read 7.3: The high school coach being in knowing violation of bylaw 10, is also subject to punishment.

So, unless I'm misunderstanding something here, my Jr. High daughter, playing on a Jr. High CLUB team (which plays both other club teams and Board of Education sanctioned Jr. High teams), CAN practice with her summer team?
This question came up this weekend with a few of our summer team girls.

crm1964,

Your DD can practice with her summer team. The fact that her club team plays "school sanctioned" teams does not matter.

so, my DD who is asked to play up on the 8th grade team is OUT of her travel tournament that weekend, or can she opt out without penalty?
