Eagles to Host 2007 NCAA Softball Championships
May 8, 2007

For years, Akron, OH, has been known as the home for the Goodyear Tire Company. When it comes to tires, the northeastern Ohio city is an industry leader.

As far as NCAA Division II softball is considered, Akron is also the place where the rubber will meet the road in 2007. The eight-team NCAA Division II championships will be played in Akron, Thursday-Monday, May 17-21, at Firestone Stadium. Ashland University will serve as the official host for the event.

The 2007 NCAA championship tournament is a double-elimination event. Four games will be played on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Monday?s championship game, which begins at 11 a.m., will be televised by CSTV.

This coming weekend, eight regional championships will be determined. The regional champs will congregate in Akron to battle for the national championship. Among the teams battling for a trip to Ohio is Lock Haven (44-3), the defending national championship.

This isn?t the first time Ashland University has hosted a national championship event (see below) in recent years. But, this is the first time the softball championships have been hosted by AU.

?I believe events like this are a great way to showcase our athletic department and our university,? said director of athletics Bill Goldring. ?The cooperation with the people in Akron has been outstanding. We?re looking forward to a great event.?
This is the third major postseason event the university has hosted this year. Earlier, AU hosted the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference swimming and diving championships and the NCAA Division II regional championships.

?It?s been a busy time, but an exciting time,? said AU director of athletic marketing Rachel Bixler, who has been responsible for helping to coordinate the championship events. ?This is something special for our coaches and athletes. With the softball championship, the best teams and players from around the country will be coming to Akron. We?ve always had great support for softball and this should be a treat for all of our fans.?
For ticket information about the NCAA Division II softball championships, contact the Ashland University athletic department, 419-289-5441.
