Negative Cheering?

Agree with all those against negative cheers. The one I can't stand is the one " three and two pitcher what you gonna do? WALK HER, WALK HER!" The chant (I'm not using cheer because cheer means something positive) is not so much the problem, but we have faced many teams that scream it at the top of thier lungs as the pitcher goes into her motion. It is total bush league. I am surprised that I have never seen an umpire try to put a stop to it either. After a few years of this, it just serves to tick off our pitcher's and they end up throwing harder.

I, too, am not bothered by this cheer until the teams scream it in that blood curdling scream as the pitcher goes into her motion. That drives me nuts! However, my DD has been a pitcher for 3 years and has learned to maintain her composure regardless of these unsportsmanlike players. There will always be knuckleheads out there, and the true champions are the ones who learn to rise above it, display good sportsmanship, and let their skills speak for themselves.

I have been to several tourn. where the umps. stopped neg cheering towards the pitcher ohsaa will not allow that type of conduct. and some usssa have stopped it as well.It does show no class to act that way.And it doesnt make up for lack of talent.

But you have to admit, its pretty satisfying when your pitcher strikes out the batter as this cheering is still going in the opposing dugout......

its funny when other teams do "3-2 watcha' gonna do, WALK HER WALK HER!!!" and then the girl strikes out.
or the one "hey pitcher whats the matter can't you stand a little chatter, high ball low ball inside outside" over and over, and the pitcher is throwing strikes. its very bush leage.

We played a real doozy of a team TWICE today. Beat them both times. Apparently in the 2nd game, our girls said that the parents and team members were swearing at our girls, calling certain team members b@#%@ and other lovely things. Now, I didn't hear this, but with the way that their coach was acting...I can certainly believe it. Not naming names, but did go back and check on the "nice team" thread to see if their name was listed. It was not. Those were two sweet victories!

this is why i love 16s..at 10, it gets obnoxious, little girls cheering every play..and at 10s no one catches anything, so it's constant high-pitched squeal the entire game...at 12's, the cheers are coordinated and blistering..nothing like being mocked by a drama/diva who dresses from justice
at 14's it ebbs and flows, depending on their mood of the day, witch is usually witchy
at 16's, they just play ball...
18s too
then they go to college and start the squealing all over again

When my DD first started playing she played little league. It is written in the little league bylaws that only positive cheers may be used. If the team chooses to do a negative cheer then they may forfeit the game at the descretion of the umpire. I think this is a great rule. We are not teaching good sportmanship if we allow this negative type of cheering.

The girls on my team would get upset with me when I would stop them from "negative cheering". I always hated it. I told them there are enough girls on our team to cheer for that you don't have to cheer against anyone on the other team. ;)

every coach has this issue...standing in the coach's box and the team hammerin' my ears.... wheeeew... that can go away without saying right now! Unless it's my team doin' it... I have had to calm them down from time to time, not often though.

Agreed. It's also kinda humorous when they keep doing the chant and you are just about to mercy them!!!!:yahoo:

I agree about how it quiets down as they get older - - 14U now and it's all about the business - unless cheering for your batter or pitcher. Hooray. We preached no negative chants, but can't say we were ever perfect all those years - especially worm / helmet kind of thing. Especially in 10U! More often than not, the next ball was a strike. :p

I asked one of our pitchers during an unusually loud game (from the other team - with lots of loud shrieks during the pitch) how that made her feel. She said "I don't hear them." :yahoo: Just like waving the bat - she doesn't seem to see that either - just the catcher's mitt.

She's a good 'un!

In my experience as a 10U coach, the best way to handle a situation that you feel is negative to your team in any way would be to discuss the situation in a rational manner with the opposing coach(es). I'm quite sure this approach would most quickly resolve any issues you may be having without unnecessary conflict. Making a mockery of the other coach as a way to resolve issues instead puts you in the same category as that which you're having an issue with. As a player and former pitcher, both in high school and D1 college softball, I was well trained to focus on the game and not whatever the other team may be chanting. This has carried over into my coaching, as I rarely hear the cheers of opposing teams. If I notice an unsportsmanlike cheer on our end, I simply ask our girls to not use that cheer again. My daughter also pitches for us & we've taught her to tune everything out, which she does very well. Negative cheering has never been used as an excuse for a performance that is lacking, rather a tool for learning to focus. Just my personal opinion here.
