Is the position Ron Sanders was talking about? Who held this position before? I am so confused on who does what for ASA.

I believe you are correct Flanagan that this is what Ron Sanders is going to be putting in for. If I'm not mistaken, the current/outgoing commissioner is Howard Honker (sp). Maybe Patty or Ron can confirm this though.

Yes, Howard is retiring as of 3/31/06. ?It was discussed at our recent JO workshop in Oklahoma City.

I too have heard that several individuals have placed their name in the hat.

I am weighing options of applying. ?It would certainly be a full-time job. ?

Help me make my decision by providing me with some feedback with your thoughts on the following:

What would you like to see happen in the Ohio ASA Youth program?
Would you be willing to help make the program successful?

Currently Ohio is divided by two regions (Region #9 & Region #10) and 3 Metro areas (Metro Cleveland, Metro Dayton both Region #9, and Metro Cincinnati - Region #10) and the balance of Ohio being one area in Region #9.

What would your recommendations be for Ohio and/or divisions of the areas?? ?

If you would rather not reply publically, please send me an email at cincysoftball@fuse.net
I really am interested in your thoughts and would appreciate any input as I consider applying for the position.

Thanks,
Patty

Who's Warren Jones? Another slow pitch guy?

ASA badly needs to have separate Commisioners for slow pitch and fast pitch. ASA needs to have someone who goes to a fast pitch tournament now and then and sees how things are run. To be holding ASA National qualifiers on crap fields is just beyond belief. Anyone who might be in the running for ASA Commissioner, get out and see the Stingrays tournament or the GAPSS tournament or some of the other tournaments that are run well. An ASA national qualifier should be every bit of that and more, especially since there are fewer teams and fewer logistical problems.

The ASA Commissioner needs to be proactive in getting the top teams and organizations into the ASA State and other big ASA tournaments. Do whatever can be done, if anything, to sign up enough teams into ASA so that we get a maximum number of berths to Nationals, and then get the top teams to make ASA Nationals a goal and help them however you can. Simply explaining in English how ASA divides regions, metro areas, etc., and the ways to qualify for Nationals would help.

Of course, as I've said before, this would require the Commissioner to have heard of and be familiar with the various teams and organizations around the state.

If the Commissioner must deal with slow pitch, then appoint someone to be the de facto Junior Olympic Commissioner and let him/her exclusively take care of fast pitch. This job is in desperate need of someone with some energy and brains.

Joe.......your comments......(This job is in desperate need of someone with some energy and brains.) seem a bit harsh given the number of years Mr Honaker has given to the ASA. I can only assume that they are being taken out of context. I do agree with a lot that you say, but I believe Mr. Honaker deserves a bit more respect than that!

Warren Jones was the ASA Region UIC & I quess is now the Player rep, and is a very good communicator and loves fastpitch. ?If he is selected I don't think it would be a bad thing. ?He is a person who will sincerely listen to you and base his decesion IMHO on whats best for the game. ?This is certainly different from the "my way or else" method some of the job seekers have displayed over the years. ?

Bob Ward replaced Mr. Fraley as the Region 9 JO Commissioner, he is committed to the youth program and will no doubt bring fastpitch to a new level here. ?I was Bob's JO commissioner and can state without a question he will support the Fastpitch community. ?

Good luck to all, lets all pray that the new commish is committed to the delvelopment of our game too.

bobby e: You make a good point. I've never met Howard Honaker and have no idea of his brain level, and my comment wasn't a shot at him. He might be the smartest person in Ohio for all I know. I was merely saying that whoever gets this job needs to have both energy and brains. I might add that we need someone who is really committed to building fast pitch in Ohio.

No matter whether anyone likes it or not, Division I coaches overwhelmingly recruit from the top ASA tournaments. That's not to say that MAC coaches and even OSU are not at the NSA WS, NSA States and qualifiers, USSSA or PONY events, as I have seen them at these events. But for the most part, if a girl wants to play Div. I college softball, she greatly increases her odds if she's at ASA Nationals, Colorado, Las Vegas, Compuware, Carolina, etc., etc, etc. Even in Ohio, the bigger exposure tournaments (Sluggerfest, Stingrays, Loudonville, Kidron, GAPSS, Toledo Fast Pitch Classic) are mostly ASA. I know there are exceptions like the SGS tournaments that do well and Beavercreek often draws a few college coaches and I'm sure some others, but my main point still stands.

Given that climate and that Illinois (and I would argue Indiana as well) are kicking our rear ends, we need somebody at the top of ASA J.O. in Ohio to be ready to go in and kick some butt of his/her own. I'm thinking if I were the ASA J.O. Commissioner, I might be making an appointment to see the heads of the Lasers, Ohio Ice, Maddogs, Stingrays, Cincy Elite, Cincy Storm (etc, etc, etc, as I know I am leaving many organizations out, including my own so that nobody will be too mad at me). I'd be lobbying all of these organizations and teams and letting them know I'd do whatever I could to help.

I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong and none of this is a good idea. If not, I'd love to hear why not.
