[h=5]My DD is new to 16u. She was selected for a team in August. She has not met any of her new teammates, nor has the coach had any practices. Is this normal for 16u?[/h]

My 16u says NO! It's not good. She should at least know the girls she's playing with. Are they involved in other sports? Still shouldn't matter we practiced until the second weekend in November and then Spano Dome. We drive an hour and 15 minutes to practice.

That is not normal, I'd suggest you find a new team. We may play more than your normal 16u team but we've already been in 2 tournaments, a winter league, scrimmaged 5 times and practice 2 times a week since mid September. You should have at the very least met each other and practiced through the fall and winter. Not a very good sign, you missed a lot of bonding time already. I'd be shopping for a new team.

Has the manager been in touch at all since tryouts? With Facebook, Instagram, e-mail, & telephones, there's no excuse. I'd shuffle on down to "Teams Looking For A Player" immediately...

I know the coaches daughter team won state in Volleyball. Not sure if she plays basketball. But he said we would have a team get together and have batting and work on pitching through the winter. Haven't heard anything. I have asked a couple times through text, but don't want to be that pain in the butt parent.

DD has kept up on pitching lessons through winter. Before snow fall hitting and fielding lessons and of course practicing some on her own.

She is getting discouraged and wants to switch teams. We have paid the $200 commitment fee in September. So not sure what to do.

I have text him two-three times. I also spoke with his wife. Kept saying they were going to have a get together. Also practice batting and work on pitching during December and never heard anything.

Sounds sketchy to me

I would be calling the coach and telling him or her this doesn't look like a good fit and do as suggested start looking for a new team. Many teams have selected their tournaments and been accepted to the bigger tourneys Lasers, Gapss, Stingrays etc... I wish you luck in finding a softball home.

If getting no results with the coach...maybe you should contact someone who is in charge at the organization
you are with. Explain what is going on/ not going on and maybe you can also get a refund of your committment fee.

Like everyone else said, it isn't sounding good. Better start looking now rather than later.

Are you sure there is a complete team? Are they posting for players?

I say it depends on your situation. Are you on a team that is playing easier or lesser known tournaments "just to play" or are you on a team that is suppose to offer college exposure and play in tough tournaments? Is your daughter interested in playing in college? There is only about one month left before HS softball starts so your current team does not have much time left to get together.

Here's the good news and the bad news. The good news is there are always teams looking for players...especially pitchers. The bad news is if you decide to leave your current team you may not get your deposit back.

If it is a cluster^#^&$%(*, then only losing $200 now, will be a lot better while finding a team before school ball versus waiting till school ball is over & everyone is starting up, then trying to bond as a new girl...........RUN< RUN< RUN, Forrest!!!

Our orgs 16u started practicing after tryouts in august and played in a fall league and in spano. Sounds like you are getitng a run areound, either they don't have enough players or were running a scam or something. I would ask for my money back and tell them you are no longer intersted in the team, should still be teams looking.

What area are you from?

Is it a recreational travel team, or a showcase type tea. If showcase you should be working already and doing fall winter tournaments. Some community teams wait until after school ball and play for the first times together then. For the price it doesn't sound like showcase team.......

Definitely not "normal", but not totally unheard of either, especially for more of a local tourney/rec team, likely of a first year coach. It's definitely not a showcase team! You certainly have a right to know how many players are confirmed and paid (though some of them could have left too for all the coach knows), and what tourneys they are signed up and confirmed for. Chances are you are going to want to find a new team, and the sooner the better.

If you are having tryouts in August you should be playing in fall tournaments/leagues and possibly winter indoors before High School ball starts. If this is not the plan it definitely should have been communicated to you what the team is planning for the entire August-August softball season when you signed up. If nothing is planned or communicated there is a problem. Sounds like a real communication issue and one I wouldn't stick around to find out the plan in June. You have given the coach an opportunity to address your concerns and he doesn't seem interested. In the end, you always need to do what is right for your daughter whatever you decide that is.

softballmom08-
to answer whether this is normal or not, what is your DD's profile?
1. did she play travel ball last year and how far did you travel for tournaments?
2. is DD interested in playing in college?
3. Does DD take private hitting/fielding/pitching lessons?
4. Does she do strength and conditioning?
5. Did she play Varsity on her HS team as a Freshman?

If the answer is "yes" to 4 of the 5 questions above, then stop the text messaging and post on the "players looking for a team" section of OFC...
