New to 16U question.

Not normal by any means. You've tried to reach out and inquire, and haven't gotten any communication in return. The rest of that team may have walked a month ago, and you'd have no way of knowing it.

I'd say that the lack of communication would be a dead giveaway that there are no plans in the near future. My only remaining question at this point, if I were in your shoes, is why??

I haven't seen any post and I asked the Coach if he had a full rooster and he said yes. That was when I asked if the team was going to have a get together. He assured me he was. It is a long time organization. I'm going to have to bite the bullet and call the director. I just don't like to make waves.

I agree with everyone else. If they had tryouts in August and put a team together and asked for cash then you should have already been practicing!! This is highly irregular as every team I know has been practicing/playing for months!! I would not worry what so ever about making waves and get in touch with the Club Director, explain the situation, and ask for a refund!! If this coach is to busy to set up a few practices in the fall and winter...not sure he is the right person to be coaching travel ball!! Best of Luck!!!

This is defintely wrong. Even most school club teams have had some sort of practices. I have a 16u and a 12u and both have been practicing through the fall and winter as well as played tourneys. We ran into something similar our first year of travel and it made for a long, long summer. Is this a first year team or coach? Sometimes that makes a huge difference on how much time they are willing to prepare in the off season. Off season makes champions.

The team is a well known organization and has been around a long time. That is why it's so disappointing. Come to think of it, it maybe he is a first year coach.

Most org's are just a confederation of independent teams. Too few run an integrated program that really monitors and oversees all the teams.

Since she is 16U, you have to ask her what her goals are. Aspiration of college ball would make me pull my daughter off the team, no matter what the coach tells you (action speaks louder than words). No such desire for next level? I would do what you think is best.

A new source of income. Collect commitment fees & never get the team together.
Wow...good luck with this.
You see a lot of consistency with the replies. All arrows are pointing to something that you already knew, but needed some confirmation on...that something smells fishy.
Where there is smoke...

Unless, of course, this is a team made up of girls who do not necessarily want to play College Ball, or who do not want to travel to overnight tourneys, and/or who play sports all year round and dont have the time or commitment to play in the of season. And No, don't say this is REC ball, because I think there is a place for athletes who fit in this category. Look how many tournaments there are at 16u any given weekend in southwest/central ohio. I would hate to have this girl bail and end up on another teams roster as a 13th. So my advice is to call the tournament team president and get the final roster, take charge and organize a get together yourself. Then you will have an idea who is in and who isn't...

In that case, then the OP should have been told when she signed "We are assembling the team now, but please understand that our team is comprised of multi-sport athletes or for whatever reason we have no intentions of getting together for practices, fall tourneys or even team bonding events until (insert date, like May 25th) after school ball is over.
I agree there are travel teams who are above your typical rec ball teams, but maybe aren't as "year-round committed" as other travel organizations.
if this was the case I would assume that the original poster would have been told this from the onset.
It appears to me that the original poster is surprised at this lack of contact. So, this team is just like you described lewam, or this is a case of terrible communication, or…...run.
going above this coach to the director of this organization certainly is not out of the question.

Good luck getting to the bottom of this!!!

Yes, CZ I see your point. Communication is really lacking and sometimes is a sign of bad things, but also could be a sign of a bad communicator. Looking at the "Teams looking" section, there are around 5 teams in the Dayton area still looking for 16u util/pitcher positions. Spread your net to Cinci and Cbus, the number of teams get even greater.
Mom- especially if DD is wanting to switch, then do your due diligence and do whats best for her...start calling and cover your bases.

I contacted Coach and Director. Coach had assistant send email out stating that a mandatory organization meeting to pay final fees was this date and apologized for not getting together or practices due to coach being unavailable. That their will be a meeting with all parents and players after the organization meeting paying our full fees.

Then Coach text me and said sent email, everything will be OK. Director text and asked if I had heard from Coach and I said Yes, He said everything will be OK. Director said OK. the end.

I told my daughter to do whatever she felt that she had to do and I would support her. There is another team that wants her. It is a mixture of 14 and 16u girls. So it is a young team. Would like to see her on a more experienced team, but at this point I really just want her to have fun and continue the love of softball!!

I'd be a little leery of the fact that they want the fees BEFORE the meeting. I'd want to get more information and ask some questions before I gave them any more money. So far you have gotten nothing for what you've already paid so why pay more until they answer some of your questions. I wouldn't give them a dime more until I got some information.

we are not having any practices or team meetings until we get all of the fees paid, then we will practice all the time and be a big happy family that's the ticket.

BINGO!
I am only one coach of one team, but I can tell you this...when we got the girls together at the end of tryouts & we had our first player/parents meeting, our first practice started while this parents meeting was going on. That was in late August & I have lost count of the practices, friendlies, games, tourneys, meetings, etc that have taken place since then. Why is all of this important? I might have one or two players whose funds are paid in full. No team needs ALL of the funds before the first practice.
Get the girls some work. You have plenty of time to collect the $.
Uniforms don't HAVE to be ordered yet.
Bat bags don't HAVE to be ordered yet.
Helmets don't HAVE to be ordered yet.
Most tourneys accept deposits, but I know some require full payment. So, what do you REALLY to have collected by this time of the year? 4 tourneys requiring full payment....this is 16U, so they are probably showcases costing $650 each. That's $2,600. $100 deposits on 4 other tourneys. My math says this team only needed to shell out about $3,000 by now.
10 players. Simple math.
Nothing more than $300 should have come out of any players pocket yet, according to these basic calculations.
Show me WHY more $ is needed already when the first practice hasn't taken place before my checkbook opens back up.
