No Countdown for High School Ball?

Luuuu Its a good thought process to give a teen age girl. They see the difference, but need to focus on school while there. Some school ball kids don't get the opportunity to play travel and the last thing a coach needs to hear is "cant wait for my travel team". May cause unecessary friction. Just advocating for a drama free world!

I to dont understand the dislike some people have for high school ball, I like both but high school ball does make more memories and doesn't cost as much , they are with more of there friends,

Not a summer coach but I am a DD fan. She's the one who doesn't like high school ball because the experiences are not positive. Her team is not a real team, the girls are mean and do not support each other. The coach singles her out daily in front of the others-a very humiliating place for a teen girl to be, rarely is it a positive comment. Unfortunately not all people who call themselves "coaches" really are. In a perfect world, I would ban such adults from working with children because they cause more harm than good.
Try-outs are officially next week but she has had a third season of winter ball and conditioning without feeling she has positively impressed the coach. She has never missed a practice or conditioning in those three years, the only game missed was because of her grandmother's funeral. We make her participate because she wants college ball, she needs to learn time-management and the coping skills needed to deal with difficult people.
Really looking forward to summer season!

Travelimom, without hesitation your daughter and you should approach first the coach to discuss this situation and then up the line if you do not get the response you feel you deserve. If left unchecked he will continue to do it not only to your daughter but others as well. Being a bad coach because of lack of knowledge or not being able to teach the sport is one thing, this is totally different and I'd be surprised if someone in the hierarchy (AD, Principle, Super, Board Member) wouldn't intercede.

Sorry to hear the way school ball goes for your DD sounds like a jealous high school coach but there is those same coaches in travel ball , My DD gets treated the same from both coaches and she also playes different positions on both teams , been on travel teams where the girls dont get along also so it really happens in both worlds, good luck to your DD hope she playes well and gets through the season well.

replying about a prior post, travel coaches don't go after college positions for similar reasons "real business" leaders don't go into politics. Too public, to crazy, tooooo little pay, budget issues, pressure to be on top, too much stress on their families, and the list goes on and on.

Just imagine if the top leaders like Alan Mullaly (Ford) or Jack Welch (GE) or you name some from the Fortune 500 would run this country!!! But.... oh, never mind. Whoa now, I'm in no way saying travel coaches could trump collegiate coaches or that a college is "settling". This is just a thought that came to my mind (mini-hi-jack). I am curious to see what the birthing grounds of coaches is, playing college then working into a job, moving from triple A baseball, travel coach to college, or what...? Food for thought.

Good luck to all of the High School players out there. Will be my DD's first experience of HS ball (plays travel). I just hope the girls have fun playing for their school, make HS memories and don't sweat the small stuff. We know politics will happen- just don't let it ruin your love for the game- travel will be back in June

Wow! Didn't post to have a little firestorm. lol I was referring to when this site was "officially" known as Ohio Fastpitch Connection (OFC), on the home page, down at the bottom was a countdown of when High School ball tryouts began. It even had the the seconds on it, that I recall. That's what my initial post was all about. And as right now, I do believe it's 27 hours and around 37 minutes if my clocks are correct in my home. Good Luck to everyone, and I'm praying for good weather like we had last year during the season, well, it was on and off, but basically decent weather. My husband found an old email from last year and says to me, "coach changed the practice to outside, it was that warm last year." I said, "I don't think right now we're going to get that. " lol

I spoke with a young lady today who is not returning to play for her senior year. She enjoys making money and has no plans to play in college. I am very thankful that my dd is staying in. Can't wait!

Too bad you feel that way, my DD played both over the years and is in college now. If you ask her what she remembers most its our high school teams 2 trips to the State Finals in her 4 years. She doesnt remember a thing about all the trips to Nationals in the summer with her travel team.

Its a totally different atmosphere when you are playing for your school in front of your family,classmates and community. Tell me where your community shows up to cheer a travel teams on LOL.

Wave - it was mostly a joke. I am not a HS coach and I don't have a daughter playing. What I have is a team that has 4 players injured because of bad field conditions, over use and terrible pitching. We practice with the players we have down here every Sunday and I always spend multiple conversations with kids telling them that it is their responsibility to play HS softball (they call it community service). I agree that those kids that play deep in the state tournament love it - but the reality is that most, and I mean most, of the teams don't have that type of experience.
