I guess not everyone gets lucky and gets the coaches that are committed or know the game well. And sometimes you get lucky and the coach is only in it for his/her daughter. We have so many parents living through their kids, I have seen that in a lot of sports and at different levels. Yes, it does seem like Northmont usually has a good high school team so they must do something right with training their kids!
Our organization started out as a slow pitch team and up until recently on here I have heard nothing but negative comments about what we did in slow pitch. Once Brittany Duncan's dad spoke up for slow pitch, others seemed to listen a little bit and realized that maybe it isn't such a bad thing.
What our organization has done, too, is bring in college aged players to coach our teams. It takes the moms and dads out of the equation and allows players to play based on an unbiased opinion. 8 of the girls on our 16U roster are Northmont girls, and only two of those played at Englewood Little League, those 2 being pitchers. All of the others were slow pitch players. If she likes slow pitch, play it until she gets to junior high, and then switch to fast ptich. All of the girls that played slow pitch for us from our school are still playing with the HS fastpitch team and doing great.

My advice, go to a few tryouts and get a feel for what you like. Have your daughter go to as many tryouts as you like. Most of the girls I know that play HS ball have been involved in some type of travel ball since they were around 10 or so. The beauty of playing travel ball is it does get your daughter the chance to play with girls that are a little more advanced. It also helps develop their game as the competition is usually a lot tougher than a recreation league.
Find what your comfortable with.
