Be aware..."Big Brother" is watching over you!!!

Strasburg-Franklin High Schools softball (8 Time State Champ, 4 Time State Runner Up) program had three coaches violate Sports Regulation 10, Mandatory No-Contact Periods, in August.

In accordance with Bylaw 11-1-2, Penalties, the Commissioners Office has imposed the following penalties:

1.) the school may not begin coaching for the 2013 season until March 11, 2013 (as opposed to the approved February 25, 2013, starting
date for all other schools); 2.) during that February 25-March 11 period, no member of the schools coaching
staff, paid or non-paid, may have contact with any of the student-athletes, and 3.) the students may engage
in conditioning and weight training activities during that February 25-March 11 period but may not use
school facilities for any softball-related activities that include the use of softball equipment. In additon, the
schools head softball coach has been suspended from coaching the schools first four regular season contests
of the 2013 season, an assistant coach has been suspended from coaching the schools fifth through eighth
regular season contests of the 2013 season and another assistant coach has been suspended from coaching
the schools ninth through 16th regular season contests of the 2013 season and is fined $250.

Wow, you hear rumors of schools violating these rules all the time. 1st time I have ever seen one actually caught and punished though I am sure it has happened elsewhere.

Usually takes a disgrunteled parent to turn in their own school to get caught

Wow, that's a pretty surprising punishment. Hopefully people take the rule seriously now that they know it may be enforced. I'd hate for this to be my senior year and have the coach screw it up like that all for a couple extra practices in August....that was stupid on the coach's part. Most of these kids are playing travel ball at that time and are getting practices anyway, why risk it??

Isnt SF one of those programs that frown on travel? I thought they liked to keep their kids in house... Maybe they changed, or maybe that wasn't them.

Why does he still have his job. If it was my district I'd be raising cain to get rid of this bad example for the kids. AD warned him then caught him. That should have been done and out.

my guess is they will keep him as he is pretty much a legend in that area -- 600 career wins ( I kinda remember that as he picked up his 600th VS our team) . but cheating , and skirting the rules should not be tolerated .

Glad I don't live in that area. I hold values and integrity over wins and losses and want that passed on to my children.
Area must be a democratic stronghold. hehehe. JUST KIDDING! lol

They do frown on travel and try to keep them in house but there are quite a few kids from the district that do play on surrounding travel teams.

We don't know the background details of this case but he clearly violated the OHSAA rules, like them or not. What we don't know is whether this was a case of the OHSAA rules actually protecting parents and students from an overzealous, manipulative and controlling coach and staff engaging in a long standing pattern pressuring the players and parents to practice and play for who they suggest as a requirement of making the HS team or a random situation of the coaches helping a little bit more than they should have during an informal open field situation. Judging from the penalties it seems more the former than the latter just based on other penalties I've seen doled out to other softball programs by the OHSAA for coaching irregularities. Of course there is no "helping a little bit more than they should" in the OHSAA eyes, Whether the coach and staff sat in the bleachers and verbally offered advice on mechanics or they walked on the field and physically instructed during the no contact period, I believe it is all the same according to the rules.

Unfortunatly the month of August is "No Contact". Not even discussion of the sport at the local McDonalds. Dumb rule but rule non the less.

The open fields that schools have are usually in September or Octoer, but as Spirit1 says, August is no contact. I think there is an exception so that coaches can help out with communications regarding college recruiting, or at least I think there used to be.
