Organization Reputation

I would like to know how important Organization reputation is.
I've seem some very cocky players and coaches over the past several years.
I've seen parents yelling at the other team. I know that I will probably be opening a can of worms- but this question has been burning in my mind.
I personally don't respect a team that acts that way.
I expect my team to behave normal. I'm all for yelling during a great play- either for us or against us.
A great catch is a great catch, great play is a great play etc.
Any input?

I think an organization's reputation is extremely important !

I absolutely agree with you about not respecting a team who yells (or the parents yell) at the other players. How could you respect them? There is just no need for that. We only played one team for 1 game last year where I thought the team (not the parents) was disrespectful to our team. I was glad we never faced them again and I would never allow my daughter to play for an organization with that kind of reputation.

How about a coach who says he will not pat a player on the back for a play he expects out of them at the position they are playing? But a select few sure heard about the bad plays they made while others' mistakes were somehow overlooked. It got so bad I wanted to be in on the after-game discussions just so the coach would not pick on the girls who had a bad game! Unbelievable........

I believe in the younger age groups (from 14U and below), they need patted on the back for good plays as well. Positive feedback leads to more self-confidence and that leads to a more productive softball player!

Welcome SpecTarter. ?I have seen some organizations that act poorly. ?I also tell my ladies to cheer in a positive manner. ?I tell a player good play when they make it be it on our team or the other team. ?We have had the teams that chant/cheer/call during our at bats and when our pitcher is throwing. ?Don't like this and kept our ladies from doing the same. ?Even had to ask the parents to calm down a bit once. ?Told them the same thing to keep it positive. ?Reputation I beleive had nothing to do with any of it. ?Eventhough some organizations think they are better than others. ?I believe this comes more from the individual coach than the organization. ??JMHO.

I think that you will find that just about every organization has its supporters (those who are currently playing with them) and then they will also have a large number of detractors (those who were either cut or had a bad experience and no longer play for them). There will be some in between but that number will be rather small.

Many organizations may have coach who does something to embarass themselves and the organization. Often these are isolated incidents and it may be unfair to classify the entire organization that way. Generally speacking I think that most teams and coaches try to act responsibly and be good role models. That is why when we all see a real jerk, they tend to stand out.

Don't be one and you won't stand out. ;) Reputation is everything!! Be it personal or your team. :)

Coaches - teach the girls and let them play ( they do not make mistakes on purpose)
Parents - sit back and enjoy the game, watch and cheer and let the coaches do the coaching

End result for me - I hope every girl does well on either side and the ones that makes great plays or just has a great game should be told so on either side.

If every organization does this - then we could all get along and everyone could have fun at all times.

Do not get me wrong, I don't care what anybody says, it is about learning, being competitive and winning but losing a game here and there is not the end of the world either. I play as much or more than most teams and we have fun as we go.

I always tell the girls to be good sports, win or lose. Don't taunt the other team or slam them in any fashion. If the other team makes a good play, let them know. It will come back to you. I think the main goal is to represent your organization, be it a school team or travel team, in the best way possible. I have always tried to instill in the girls I have coached that respect begets respect and at the end of the day, that is what matters. Respect the game. the officials, and the competition, and your organization will be known as a class act, and to me as a coach and a parent, that is what matters.

Best tool is to watch teams from other organizations while at tournaments. Watch how the coaches, parents, and players conduct themselves before, during, and after games. Listen to what they say and how they react to good games and bad games.
Also if the team has a website you can learn alot from there.

If a organization has a bad or good rep the word gets around. After time you will know whom the well ran ones are. Like somebody mentioned earlier,in most cases a former player and parent probably wont give high praise.

Ive seen coaches from other organizations just made their organizations look horrible because the way they acted. Ive saw teams that when they are winning the coaches and parents seem to be the best people around. But when they loose a couple games in a row.............WATCH OUT! You talk about a Jeckyle and Hide act. It would just stun you the things we heard and saw.

On a higher note Ive seen a few organizations from top to bottom that were class acts! Not an act either, just well coached, well ran,and the girls played the game like they were asked to play. I went out of my way to talk with their coach just to let him know what a great job he was doing.

Bottom line is you will have your 'good' ones, 'decent' ones, then the 'bad' ones!

Interesting topic. There are certainly teams/parents/coaches that are over the top. It seems to me you see more of it at the younger ages then the older ages. (very unscientific observation). Of course some people are just poor sports. In most cases I think there are other causes. Just my opinions.
Ignorance- at younger ages, I think we see parents and players (sometimes coaches) get upset over calls and plays when they don't have a good understanding of the game. Interference and obstruction calls (or lack of calls) are prime examples.
Misunderstandings. I have coached a little, and have several DDs. Players come back to the bench after a somewhat awdward/unusual play that goes against our team. Player heard laughing from the other bench, and immediately assume it is aimed at them. Usually takes only an inning or two to point out the player the same thing occurring on our bench, and the laughing is completely unrelated to the game. A pitcher hits a batter and is suddenly nervous, and to hide the nervous cracks a smile, suddenly the parents and players think it is intentional. That list goes on.
Protectiveness, none of us want our kids to get hurt, unfortunately, injuries occur. Sometimes contact with other players is involved. I won't pretend that it never happens intentionally, but it is usually less often then parents believe.
My personal favorite is when players are mismatched with their team, real or perceived. Everyone wants their DD to play, and also for her team to win. Players are on teams where they get to play their favorite position all the time, but the team is only average. Or worse yet, the team is average and your DD is still not playing a lot. Frustration, and sometimes it gets directed at the nearest target, umps, opposing players, coaches etc.

Define "organization". I only say that due to the fact that three years ago our daughter tried out for a very reputable organization. We were excited to hear she had made the team and had big expectations. However, we later found that the "organization" did not travel together, support each other, etc. It seemed that the "organization" was not that, but just simply had the same name. While the coach of the team (one age bracket above us) was very well known and liked, our coach was not. Honestly, I don't think there was any criteria involved for this coach to "coach". Once we made it to our second year, we noticed that we weren't having a good turn-out for tryouts, etc. The girls on the team were not disrespectful to other teams. In fact, we had a wonderful group of girls but unfortunately, we also had a coach that no one liked! We stayed with the team because of the girls and just prayed that we would be able to complete a roster should anyone leave the following season. My daughter is now w/an organization that supports one another and has criteria that must be met in order to coach. It's just too bad that all organizations don't handle their teams in this manner.

I actually have to admit that I haven't seen near as much "bad behavior" as I used to. ?I think this past season was the best ever, as far as parents keeping their mouths shut, coaches acting their age (and not the age of their players) and the teams treating eachother with respect. ?Oh sure, there's always a few bad episodes that burn in my mind, but for the most part, I've seen more good behavior than bad! ?I believe this IS contributed to "team reputation" because nobody like to be dubbed a "trouble-maker". ?It's like anything else, the more friends you have, the more successful you're likely to be. ?Making enemies and a bad reputation for yourself / team is just a bad idea....in any situation.

reputation - One of my players is getting recruited by serveral D1 colleges. Cleveland State said, they usually just recruit Lasers... Reputation goes a long way. I'm hoping they'll say Lasers and Classics next year :)

We played a fall game this past Sunday and after the game my dd's coach sat the kids down and told them of all the good things he saw and where the team needed work. We had a batter (my dd) who did not like a call, we also had a pitcher who did not like a call. They both got talked to about how the umpire is there friend and whatever the call it is the call.

We have a wonderful group of coaches this year. I just know that we will have a great season. Hopefully winning but even if we lose it will be a great year.

You're kidding right? If so, that is beyond lazy.

Ringer, my thoughts exactly. If a college is recruiting from one team or organization, it had better be the OC Batbusters. Even then, it simply makes no sense, other than for the coach to admit that he/she is not capable of discerning talent when he/she sees it.

Can you imagine if Jim Tressel said he only recruited from two or three high schools?

Doesn't say much for Cleveland State! So Jessica Simpson from Hoover wouldn't be recruited? There are many very good softball players, that for whatever reason do not play on so called elite teams. Go to any of the college camps and you will see gems just waiting for the right college to recruit them. I know a 14U catcher right now, that we would all fight over, that is only playing rec, till high school because of $$. She played one year of 12U traveling on an elite team. Go to the state high school games and see the number of colleges scouting, not all kids play traveling ball.

It should be important but unfortunately it is not to a lot of teams.
