Pitching and Pitchers Discussion Pitcher Ousted For Being Too Good

A Connecticut youth baseball team with a phenomenal 9-year-old pitcher has been disqualified because its team is too good.

Thats the start of a story on foxnews.com, (link above). It went on to say his pitching is so fast and accurate, they want the team to replace him.

What if; lets say a phenomenal 10u girl, pitcher, was playing in a rec league and the league thought she was too good, told her she can't play in the league and said she should go play for a travel team.

Fair or no?

Our local Parks & Rec. league in NE Ohio banned travel players from pitching and now does not allow any travel players at all. They already had limits in place as to how many innings any one pitcher could pitch in a game. Now our community does not even have rec. ball for 10U or 12U because once our travel players could not participate, we did not have enough players for a team in either age group. (We are a small school district). So some girls are now left with no team at all.

Not fair imo! Travel is not for everyone. My family just had this discussion over dinner tonight. DD & dh were both in agreement that if the kid is that good, then he should play at the next level, not in a developmental rec league. They both thought that if it was financial issue, that someone would be willing to "sponser" the stud. I think it's a whole lot more than money. We sacrifice so much to give this to our dd (now 2 dd's), that it's simply not something that every family can give to their kid. It's a huge investment emotionally also. Someone paying the fee doesn't pay for the entire family to travel around & all the expenses incurred with that, nor do some families wish to be separated.

I know of a girl who when she was 10 was told that because she was hitting the ball so hard, the recreation board was worried that she would hurt someone and would appreciate it if she would play travel and not return the next year.

And to think that in the rec league in the tiny village we used to live in, there were two age groups. 10U and 11-high school. One coach said my daughter would not be allowed in the infield as an 11-year old because they thought it would be too dangerous for her.

Think about what they are truly saying...

Hey Kid, I know you worked hard. You gave up your evening to go practice with the old man while your friends were all over at Timmy's playing XBox (and you missed out on that)... We know you came home after school and instead of laying on the couch watching Spongebob and eating carmel popcorn, you were out throwing baseballs into a pop up net... We know... you practiced every chance you got....

You see.. the thing is... you worked too hard. Your hard work payed off and well.... we want people that don't work hard... people that put in no effort... you know the type - the ones that throw their gloves in the closet at the end of summer and don't bring them out until next year... If you had not worked as hard as you did... maybe you could have played with us...

Next year we want to put a ban on any kid that hits over 0.400. We don't want kids that work hard to learn to hit the ball either....

They are talking about this on Mike and Mike in the Morning. They said he throws 40MPH and is 9U. There are many many 9U girls in the state who face pitchers who throw a lot harder than that week in and week out in the summer. I would say 40MPH is just average. REC ball, you gotta love it.:lmao::yahoo:

why can't we just let the kids play..........there is always going to be someone better than you that is what drives competitors to get better.

Our rec league in NEO, does not allow travel ball players from 14U on up. and if you go undefeated during the season you can't play in the season ending tourney.

Our rec league coordinator actually made provisions so more travel ball players would play rec. No Friday, Saturday, or Sunday games!! He thinks that it is a good idea for rec girls to try to aspire to her level.....besides, she is 10. Rec ball is a lot of socialization for her!!

If you ban players that work hard and achieve great results, how are we going to get better? Yes I agree, he probalby should start playing select ball. It is not doing him much good to stay in rec ball. But you just can change in mid season.

Isn't that what America is based on? You work hard at something, strive to be the very best. Then go get the pay off.

Oh no I forgot, You go to school, You get the best degree. Become a doctor or a Lawyer, Work from 5.30 in the morning until all hours of the night. You become successful, make a lot of money. Then you have to pay a higher percentage of taxes because you are a success.

Maybe the post does make sense, We wouldn't want anyone to throw the ball past the batter. That's just un American now.

This has got to be the one of the dumbest things I've seen in a long time. If you have a dominate team, at some point you are going to throw a game. It's scary to think there are people out there with ideas like this AND in a position to carry them out. I would expect this out of Sciota county but not in NEO.;&

Mediasteve says it all. We are so worried about hurting someone's self-esteem that we are punishing the atheletes with the true talent and desire who give up alot to excel at a sport. It should be up to the player and the family whether or not they want to take that next step. If you are afraid your kid is going to get hurt playing with a player of that caliber, than take them outside after school and WORK WITH THEM!!!, otherwise, don't sign them up for ball. The ones who are good shouldn't be penalized because some parents are to lazy to play with their kids. I work and my husband works and we still make time for our kids. Baseball and softball is a tough sport, if you can't hack it, go play golf. Where do you think the average players learn to get better from, certainly not most of the rec coaches. From watching and playing with the better players. No wonder the talent keeps getting thinner, we are trying to raise a bunch of wimps.

In LL in englewood we try to get as many travel ball players to play rec as we can. So they can get on our tournment team. In basball in littleleague it is still really hard to get to state in ohio becuase we don't have the best players due to travel ball and there are about 8 teams in each division still. We try to find ways to get travel ball players to play in the league for that reason and to get better players in the league. In softball it is very easy to go to state. you pretty much have to play one team and beat them twice in district 8.

This is ridiculous!! Even more ridiculous that there would be people that feel a 9 yr old can't play 10u ball. Come on. So the kid is talented. I am sure he picks up the ball more than 2-3 months out of the year.

It was probably that parent of a couch kid that thinks it is unfair that his/her kid struck out everytime. Spend more time with those kids and teach them how to hit a good pitcher.

And to keep travel kids out of rec ball!! These are the kids that love the game. They make other players better. My dd plays travel ball and she played req ball for a couple of years. She enjoyed req ball because it was a time that she could play ball with kids in her community. It wasn't about competition like req ball. Like SeriousAboutSB said--it was a social time for her.

We did however make the decision not to allow her to play during her 12 and 13 year old span because we felt that someone could get hurt. She is a fast pitcher and a hard hitter. The players weren't mature defensively. We discussed it and felt it wouldn't be a good decision.

ridiculous issue... that's life. Media Steve is right on. Some are better, some are average, some are great.
