pitchers on high school team

You can never have enough pitchers. Competition rules the day. If you want to find out who is best....let them feel the heat and work it out themselves.

If you have more than two pitchers, I don't think that they get an equal load, unless they are equally talented.

Most high school teams don't have an issue with pitcher fatigue until (maybe) they get into the playoffs.

I don't think that fatique should ever be an issue for a high school pitcher, even when they get into the playoffs. The games are normally spread out enough to allow plenty of rest. I am not advocating that multiple pitchers should carry the load, but definately multiple pitchers should be given the oppertunity to be the one to do the job. Without competition complacency can set in.

I have seen some great pitchers show some fatigue late in the season on high school teams. The pitcher and the coach would not likely admit it, but there just isn't the same pop on the fastball or the tight spin on the rise... The high school season is a grind. The difference between high school and summer is that high school is almost every day, six days a week. Pitchers often throw 5 days per week. There is no time for the muscles and tendons to recover from the 100-140 pitches thrown in a seven inning game.

Teams need two pitchers during the season so your Ace is fresh for the play-off run or for that critical conferece game at the end of the season.

On the other hand, you really only need two pitchers. If you need a third, you can pull her up from JV. The third pitcher is better off getting innings at JV, than sitting the bench on Varsity.

Good post cdmx5,......We all know how many games are played on a weekend during travel season, and yes I've seen a few girls who can carry a team, but for the most part, High School season is sort of like tournament finals every day. You don't want to give any team a chance to beat you, so you play hard evry day. It seems easy to say it's just one game, but 3 or 4 games a week adds up. I think a staff with an "Ace" or "Workhorse" with solid relief or someone who can take control of some non-league games is essential to the ultimate success at year's end. It's not just the physical toll you need to take into account, but also the emotional toll.
