prioritizing qualities for an assistant HS/ JV coach

I know HS coaches, assistant coaches and JV coaches are discussed here at different times. Because of increased numbers this year my school is allowing me to have another coach. This coach will assist me and my current assistant, as well as help with JV games. For the most part we will play JV games immediately following varsity games, but there may be a few times when we go our separate ways.

I heard that 4 or 5 candidates have applied for the position.
I would like to to give my principal and AD a list of what I am looking for in a prioritized list.

I am very high on loyalty as #1. I do not want somebody who will talk to players or parents about what he/ she disagrees with, or topics that are considered confidential.

For #2, since we will be 3 weeks in, I want someone who won't come in and try to change everything or have a personal agenda. I want somebody that will be active, but I want them to do their best to blend in as if they have been there all along.

Hopefully all the candidates will have a fastpitch background, and I certainly don't want someone who doesn't know anything at all, but I think the other 2 priorities are more important at this point. Do you agree with me or disagree. Are their other factors that I am not considering?

Please give me your honest opinion. This should be a good season and I don't want to jeopardize it with this choice.

Thanks

Witz, finding a qualified assistant is like finding that diamond in the rough! I am always searching for a good one.
1) Has knowledge of the game and has played the sport of fastpitch or baseball at a higher level than rec ball.
2) Outgoing attitude in communication with a calm manner with parents as well as team members.
3) Most important your assistant most know it is her/his job to support you and all the game and team plans with a 100% effort even if they do not agree with them. Work the team plan theme is critial by an assistant.

I take it that you are the H.S. Head coach! Do you get to inteview these candidates?

I'm certain that you already have somethings in mind of what you would like to see in your Assistant Coach.

1. You are the Head Coach. That's No.#1.
And as No#.1 you will need to groom your assistant in their position, as a New Assistant they are not going to know what is expected of them if they are not instructed. They are there to assist you and the team; not to Rule the Roost, the Assistant may their offer an opinion as to some suggested changes for the team, but it is up to you whether to implement them or not.
You should however have an open line of communication with your Assistant's.

2. A solid Fastpitch Softball background is a must! No 5 year Rec. coach is going to have that kind of experience. (I used to coach Rec.)and know I wouldn't want a Rec. Coach with little experience. H.S. Softball Rules are different.

3. Loyalty and Respect are earned, And so you as the Head Coach will have to gain their Loyalty and Respect (just like your players do)in order for them to return it.

4. No! Assistant Coach should be speaking with players or parents about what he/ she disagrees with, or topics that are considered confidential. That is handled by you!

Just remember the Pre-game! Who must be present? You! The Head Coach

Best of Luck!
With your New Assistant and this Softball Season

FASTPITCH! Anything else, And you're playing to SLOW!
