publicizing team stats

In the past ive given each family a periodic report that gives them all of their dds stats in comparison to the rest of the team, i.e. sally is batting .256 and the composite team avg is .299. Gives each family insight into how their dd stacks up...

Im considering publicizing all team stats with all families now. Were a first year 14u team. Im on the page that this will help force a bit more accountability through the team as to who is not directly pulling their weight but im also concerned about potential negative impacts as well. Im not sold that inducing shame based accountability is the way to go.

Anyone have direct experience on publicizing 14u stats and the impact that it has had?

When my teams were in the 12U - first year 18U range we'd give everyone their own stats along with the team average stats. The full team stats were reserved for the coaching staff and were not discussed outside of the coaches (a minor problem when you have parent coaches, but manageable if approached correctly). Stats should never be used to "induce shame", but as a means to let the girls know quantifiably where they are in relationship to the team. Also can be used to explain why their playing time is what it is.

Having said that, your stats are only as good as your scorebook....

Plus, as a coach , youre opening yourself up to comparing and wondering why suzy who bats .0003 better than your best defensive player isnt playing her spot . Offensive stats are just one aspect and doesnt show the whole picture. I wouldnt give out stats unless you have a competant scorekeeper and theyre be asked about for recruiting purposes.

I always did as Bear described. One coach also had me keep a team leaders sheet with the top 3-4 at the major stats.

The new scoring systems (e.g. Gamechanger, iScore, etc.) make the stats available to everyone. Anyone have any issues with that?

With respect to the problem of opening yourself up to parent complaints about playing time, that is in some respects a moot point because so many parents keep their own stats on iscore and other electronic programs.

I prefer the approach of showing the player's stats against team averages, but I think that at least once last year we handed out a summary of all the players' stats. It didn't create much drama.

I used to give stats out after every tournament - not any more for all the reasons listed above. Too many headaches.

Our team has the majority of our parents keeping their own books on IScore or Gamechanger, so at any given time, everyone knows everyone else's stats. We haven't had any grumbling about stats as of yet. And even with those, what one person may score as an error, another may not, so it's still subjective. (Holy run-on sentence, Batman!) In today's age of technology, I think the fear of handing out stats is a mute point.

I think not giving out stats goes right along with not keeping score or not giving grades in school. Saying it might "shame" someone is the glass is half empty thinking. Maybe it will motivate someone to work harder! Either way kids are not near as fragile as some would think. Who is going to protect them from college on?

Our team gives out complete stats and it has not been a problem. I appreciate that they do and my DD has been on both ends of the scale..

In years past I have given stats out after every tournament. I would sent the team stats with all names removed but that players. But this season I asked the parents if it was alright to send the team stats without removing the names. In 2 years they will be in High School and then all their stats will be in the paper. The parents were all for it and I was always all for it so I send them out every weekend now. We are an older 12U team. We use an iPAD for scoring with the program iScore. The scorekeeper sits next to me and tell them if it's an error or not. Since I am the one without a DD on the team. So far so good. But you can never make everyone happy.

One easy way to publish stats without causing too much drama is to post that particular player at the top of the list with her name and stats, then list all other player stats anonymously (Player A, Player B, etc.)
The player can see where she stacks up with the team, and it may be motivational, but it also respects the privacy of each girl.
Of course, everyone outside of the coaching staff tries figure out who is who. :)

I keep the scorebook and stats for our 12u team. Up til now, it has only been for coaches eyes. And I've been seriously thinking for the last several weeks as to whether we should give the stats to the players because a few weeks ago my DD asked me how she was doing compared to everyone else. I didn't show her everyone's individual stat, but explained to her that although she was 4 or 5 in highest batting average, she was leading the team in strikeouts at the time (she had a bad 2 week slump in May). Now after every weekend she asks me where she is and if she is still leading in strikeouts. So, I think showing her the stats really helped her begin to focus on things she needs to work on at the plate. And for the first time, I saw her out back one night last week doing some T work on her own without me saying anything. Truly a proud moment for me.

I realize there are two sides to this game. But unless you are a pitcher or catcher, I think the reduced number of defensive plays you make compared to plate appearances are much easier to remember and know what you need to work on defensively without needing a stat to show you. JMO

If you chose iScore and set up a web site, you can password protect it if you like.

Interesting thing this past weekend at the Music City Hits in Nashville. Team we were to play next is called YAK Fastpitch. Wanted to know what the YAK was for so I googled them. Found their web site which had their hitting stats but only showed name and number of games played. Rest was blank. I logged into my Gamechanger account and all the stats appeared which I was able to print off and we used during the game. ha

Actually it was stats from the tournament they played the previous weekend.

Stats definitely help you get an objective view of what is happening. Whether it is with a specific player or the team as a whole.

I really like the Gamechanger software. It gathers neat stuff like who looks at the most first strikes, how many pitcher a player see per at bat. I find those kind of stats neat because it gives you an idea of how each player approaches their at bat. There is even a stat on who has the most hits after having 2 strikes......

The suspense is killing me ... so what did YAK stand for?!?! ;)

Never found out! Nothing on the web site. They are from North Carolina and have a large baseball org too. I should have asked them before we played but we beat them and I didn't want to ask after that. We were thinking maybe it's for Youth Athletic Klub. Seen s o c c e r clubs use the K but there is also a Buffalo type creature in Asia called a YAK and Wilson makes gloves out of their hide. Suppose to be 4 times stronger then cowhide. Who knows. ha

Set up an easel at practice with a big poster displaying everyone's stats.

Print in large letters at the top...

"The beatings will continue until the stats improve..."

...sorry, just couldn't resist! :D
