Pitching and Pitchers Discussion Re-Plant

:lmao:....once you get some more experience, you will understand.

It's a shame that OFC allows slanderous remarks to be hidden by anonymity. Bill Hillhouse does NOT teach pitchers to crow hop and even if this pitcher is a student of his you cannot indict a pitching instructor for the actions of 1 pitcher. Moreover, its irresponsible to throw him under the bus when 100 pitchers are accused of this action each day that are not student's of his. If you believe he is teaching girls an illegal pitching motion, then you obviously have never been to him for a lesson or KNOW what is being taught. It's patently unfair to look at this picture and assume the girl is doing exactly what she is being taught to do at her lessons. For all you know she pitches indoors (practices) one way, and outdoors completely different since pitching outdoors IS different.

Simple, if she dragged to there it's legal, if she hopped it isn't. ;&

Is the 3rd base coach a man or a women?....

The bigger question is why does it look like there is a severe slope towards the 3rd base fence-line? If you look at the coaches feet, looks like there is a foot difference between the playing area and then it goes downhill to the fence. Ankle and knee injuries....

Some schools have diamonds that look like Progressive Field, some have fields that look like some farmer's pasture... Just appreciate it when you do get to play on a gem.

I was there at the game and the pitcher named was dragging her back foot. And Louisville's field is probably the nicest field Ive seen

Since this is my favorite topic, I must weigh in....It's not about whether the foot was dragged, even though many on here will debate that until the sun dies. (and that is what defines a replant in the rule book.) Look at the position of the arm at the point where the plant foot is touching the ground, The pitcher still has plenty of motion left to re-generate another push-off. If her arm was in the release position, I would say that it is not a replant. Any pitcher whose arm motion is delayed in the process sufficiently to allow her to get a 2nd push is by definition (at least in my mind) replanting.

...and considering she hasn't even reached the 12:00 o'clock position yet, if she was dragging to this point, she still has a l-o-n-g way to drag (maybe another 2 feet or so) before release to stay legal. Not buying it for a minute, and disappointed that a field ump would not see that. Oh well, as long as she doesn't gain an advantage... :lmao:

OldGuy, very insightful - the root of this can come from not timing the arm rotation with the rest of the motion. Kids who are taught using the fixed positions ("T", "K", etc.) without understanding how it relates to timing can get stuck in these bad timing habits. Some instructors just use the whole motion without the "stop-motion" positions. The whole motion MUST be one fluid action, without any herky-jerkey hitches. By allowing the drag foot to stop as shown in this picture, you will see a pronounced "hitch" in her motion, where she briefly stops while balancing her weight on that back foot/leg, then push off and continue her delivery. Classic re-plant. Kids with this motion typically drag the foot through AFTER the re-plant making it appear the drag was during the entire motion. It's no different than only looking at the finish of a bat swing and saying all was OK.

Sigh... maybe some day we will pay as much attention to pitching mechanics as we are beginning to do with hitting.

Just one question... Why hasn't her high school coach fixed this!?!?!? I can imagine the conversation and subsequent OFC posts if he/she dared to address a re-plant. :lmao:

You guys have it right. Dragging is not exclusive of replanting. Rule 1 of the ASA Rules defines a crow hop as:

"the act of a pitcher who steps, hops, or drags off the front of the pitcher's plate, replants the pivot foot, establishing a second impetus (or starting point), pushes off from the newly established starting point and completes the delivery".

Rule 6(H) states that "pushing off from a place other than the pitcher's plate is illegal. This includes a 'crow hop' as defined in Rule 1."

Many people such as serenesoftball believe (or I could be missing some sarcasm in serene's post) that if there is no leap involved and the pivot foot is dragged, it's a legal pitch. But the rules could not be clearer that a pitcher who drags the pivot foot to a spot where she replants for an additional push has thrown an illegal pitch.

What I hate is the umpire who calls the illegal pitch a few times and then says "if I call it every time she's illegal we will be here all day." To steal a line muttered often by Ted in response, "if you called it every time she's illegal, she would stop throwing illegal pitches."

The thing that amazes me, is that these girls pitching coaches do not correct this problem. Their is a youtube poster called fastpitch trainer. He occasionally post videos of young ladies that look like skill videos. One was of a girl who I think was going to be a freshman pitcher. Her replant was so obvious by the amount of dirt she was kicking up it wasn't even close. I mean it was almost comical the amount of dirt flying into the air. I made a comment very nicely that she might want to correct that before umpire's start calling the replant. He immediately took off the ability to comment on the video and blocked my subscription to his youtube page. Once again the question to all the pitching coaches, why would you let something like that go on? She may spend countless hours working on something that given an umpire following the rules for once;& could make for a very long game or her not being able to pitch at all.

Everybody here is a pitching expert yet I'll bet not many have actually pitched a game of FP in your life. Twinsdad, you have no clue whether this girl is doing what she is taught or whether she takes liberties on her own in games. You people have to realize that pitchers pitch one way in practices and another way when they go outside and use a real ground/rubber. My DD was not a hopper but there were times she was called for it because the ground conditions downright required it. She had 2 options, hop over or break her ankle in the holes.

I was just having a little fun , Can I be the 1st to suggest the 3 things you don't discuss with family and/or friends is politics, religion, and pitching mechanics ?

JK , I love discussing all 3 but pitching is not my cup of tea, I tend to think of them like BouldersDad.
