rec youth league softball tournaments ! could your travel team even win ?

There are some rec teams with comparable pitching to travel teams. As a previous post stated, not all talent has went to travel yet. With that being said, at the 10u and 12u level a travel team would lose IMO. You would see a bigger difference in skill level at the older age groups.

This is an interesting question. So, I looked back over our season so far at the games we have played. We are 18-3. We have given up more than 3 runs twice, once 7 (in a win), and once 4 (in a loss). We have given up exactly 3 runs twice (one a win, one a loss). We have played in Dayton Metro, Region 9 USA/ASA, Great Lakes Regional USA/ASA, and HOH 16U Summer Celebration. So, I would place a wager than we would win the tourney while only scoring 3 runs in a 14U rec tourney. BTW - it is sometimes difficult for very good hitters to hit our pitching, I don't believe a rec player would touch them.

I would say if the 10u travel team played 14u rec...might have a chance to lose...most OFC top 10 teams wouldn't have any issue with the original question and even this new scenario.

IMO the three runs per game max. could cause some real problems. The three runs would almost completely eliminate any advantage your travel team would have offensively. That leaves you relying on your pitching and defense to not allow more than two runs per game.

Based on my experiences at 10U/12U, out of 39 rec teams you would see at least 1/2 of these teams who couldn't score any runs against an average travel team. The travel pitching would dominate.

Out of the rec teams remaining, most would need less than average pitching, defensive errors, or just plain luck to score runs against an average travel team.

That would leave maybe three out those original 39 teams who would have any real chance at scoring runs and possibly winning a game. There absolutely are some girls playing rec ball that can handle the better travel pitching and who could hit the ball.

Add in to the mix the playing up/ playing down to your competition, and your travel team has a very good chance of getting beat by one of these rec teams.

Take the three run limit away and your travel team has a very high probability of winning the tourney.

I can see the headline now "Gary's House of Haircuts and Ice Cream Girls Beat Travel Team To Win Tournament"

That's a tourney I'm passing on...more to lose than gain!

I have heard of some "city league all-star" teams put a whipping on some travel teams in the past. For example a few years back a travel coach mentions to his assistant on front of multiple rec teams coaches that he doesn't know why they even entered this tournament because there is no competition here. First pool game they played they got beat by a very small town rec all-star team. I would say it would be possible for a stud travel team to win with the stipulations mentioned but it wouldn't be a walk in the park. Especially with 40 teams entered. Every sport will have an under dog upset once in a while. Michigan fans would agree if they remember Appalachian State :lmao:
