OFC-Ohio Fastpitch Connection/TSZ-The Softball Zone question of
the day ???

Questions

1.) What can your Girls Fastpitch tavel program do
to help support the grass roots of the game ?

2.) If your already working/supporting a Rec or Youth
program, what is your program doing to help ?

Our team has put on clinics for the younger rec players, we do a day where we have our players work stations, instruct and work individually with each girl. Our players get to share their knowledge and get a taste of what the coaching side is all about and the little ones think it is the greatest thing in the world, it's a win-win for everyone involved. We have been doing this for a few years and have been turned down a time or two so unfortunately not all rec programs are receptive.

My DDs 15 and 16 have signed on to asst. coach a 10 re team. Some how they win alot, and have alot of fun doing it. The best thing they do is show, "this is what works for me". and the little ones listen.

We have found it helps with their understanding of the game more as well. They see it in a whole new light from that side of the bench.

The biggest help would be to not 'force' the girls out of their rec program by:
a) telling them they are not allowed to play rec at early ages, especially 10u. Given the choice, the girls want to play both at these levels. They are not yet ready to give up playing with their friends. The girls will go to travel only when the time is right. Even so, as long as the team is upfront about at least this it allows parents/girls to consider their options.
b) convincing a girl she has a 'hitch' in her swing after every rec game. No doubt there is a speed adjustment at times. But there is plenty of slow pitching in travel also. This is a self-serving comment I have heard some travel coaches make to try and get a girl to quit rec mid-season. This is a bunch of bs. I have no respect for any coach that does this.
