Newbie Parent Softball Book, what's your recommendation? What book(s) is available that would be an excellent read for new parents of a softball player?

There are some books that are more general knowledge and cross over to other sports. My favorite is, " The Talent Code: Greatness Isn't Born. It's Grown. Here's How." By Daniel Coyle.

Honestly, I think what you're looking for, you'll actually find more of on sites such as this one by looking and searching older threads and topics that interest you and it won't cost you a dime. You'll find numerous books and e-books on softball's specific topics such as strategy, hitting, catching, throwing, etc. etc. However, a word of warning. Through the use of slow motion cinematography, many of the former instruction/drills/mechanics are now considered out of date if not completely wrong.

go to youtube and type in Sue Enquist and watch all her motivation and training videos. she can get a head start on the mental game of softball and then get into training vids. i was never much of a reader. Videos work a lot better IMHO

this is a great one --- football but its about the mental side. Nick Saban is awesome.

I like to use words to break it down. One of the last things I preached to teams I coaches was to stay hungry! EATT with 2 t's.
E - effort
A - attitude
T - teammate- be the best
T - teamwork - one Team

I used the Enquist videos with softball school. They are easy to break down and form lessons around.

As far as what is the best softball or coaching /parent book...I would think that depends on what one is looking to get out of the read.

Like you said DanMaz, videos and a lot of the FREE or low cost online training through ACE, NFHS, NFCA helps make well rounded parents, players and coaches. These training programs starts the process of helping coaches becoming a certified coach and better informed parents/players. Something we need more of.

Mike Candrea is also a great name to search and watch good simple training videos. He is in most of the ACE certification programs and videos.

Everything all the others have suggested in book or video form are full of knowledge. I have a suggestion that's a little old school. Sharon Drysdale has more than one book on the game and quite frankly are the bibles of softball that many of the top coaches refer to in their teachings. Enquist and Candrea are only 2 of many that were instructors for the National Fastpitch Coaches College (NFCC) that is sponsored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). The coaches college is advanced courses that are actually accredited for a Masters Degree in KInesiology from the Texas Women's University in Denton Texas. Most of the instructors from those courses openly refer to Drysdale's work. This may not be info for a "new" parent but I highly recommend it for a novice or anyone coaching. She truly is the Mother of Softball.
