With tryouts happening soon what percentage or numbers of girls returning that you would consider as good number for your team.

No expert here by any means but there can be many reasons including part of team having to move up. I would think almost always lose one or two to personality clashes or just not feeling comfortable or families moving. Guess what I am saying it doesn't always have to be due to large drama issues. Would be worried though if there are 3 coaches and the only 3 returning are their daughters. Red flag for sure!!

Depending upon the age, type of team, general roster size, competitive aspects, and a bunch more then 3-5 additions could be the norm. You'll get varying generalizations with so many factors at play.
And yes, Red Flags a plenty sometimes.

We normally had 2-3 players not returning ever season when I was Coaching. Not sure what the numbers are now. But I would be surprised if they were higher then that. And if they were, I would have some questions to ask the Coaches before we tryout for any team that was replacing more then 4 players. I guess that would be my red flag.

Is it customary for teams to have the girls from their current year team attend try outs to make the team each year? Or do most coaches, just have tryouts to fill voids for move ups or girls who have left the team?

When we had tryouts, returning players could attend tryouts to help with hitting stations or shaggy buckets of balls. But for the most part we didn't require returning players to attend tryout unless they wanted.

We always wanted to spend as much time as we could watching softball players that attended tryouts. So we could make a fair evaluation of all potential players.

When I was with the Static the players went through the tryout process. Its good for potential players and families to see the skill of the returning players and to push each other to perform.
These ladies would also lead their perspective age groups through the process since the Static used some unique infield / outfield drills.

As far as returning players I carried a roster of 12 with three pitchers just about every year we were looking for 3 sometimes 4.
