And like I said in a different post she wanted to do tee drills at 10pm last night cause she couldn't sleep. So she is not at all complaining about extra work.

Well on the bright side maybe the extra running will make her tired at night and she will get a good nights rest!

My dd's a pitcher and pitchers and catchers have to run more than the rest of the team because they have to have "strong legs" :) so they run during pitching/catching at the beginning and then with the rest of the team at the end of practice.

way to put this thread back on track chstrahl. one thing i do know. and it took me awhile. sport teams are not a democracy. the coach(dictator) has all the power. the only time that i would interfere now if what they where doing was unhealthy and thecoach was being unreasonable. still don't understand all the long running. i'd rather see explosive running home to first......... this game is fast and girls need to be fast or at least quick.

DD came home from practice last night and as always I ask how practice was? I usually get the same answer - which is always fine, but last night it was a different story. Spent last 15 minutes doing sprints - I thought this was softball practice not basketball practice - she seemed irritated. My response was this stop you’re complaining (if you are) and just deal with it. It’s the coach’s team to run as she seems fit not yours. I completely understand the frustration, but I’m not going to let her know. I always tell the kids if was it was easy everyone would be doing it. (One of my favorite sayings) My wrestling coach used to say that all the time back in the day.

60' turn left!!! I never did understand why some coaches think you have to run cross country in order to be in shape for softball. and with all these threads and story's about high school ball makes me not looking forward to it next year!! thank god we don't have middle school ball. (why does that sound wrong??)SMH

We start Middleschoo/JR High ball next year - It should be ... Intresting - from what I hear.

The killer for DD wont be the running so much as the drama, politics and meanness- The three things she hates more than running.

I look back at many of the reasons we stopped playing "wreck ball"... seems to be starting all over again in school ball. ? or it seems that way from a lot of comments on OFC.

Same here - thats the reason we quit 'Wreck' and went to Travel, to get away from Politics and Drama - and with School ball she will be back with the same girls -

But.. she realy wants to do it - She Likes the Idea of representing her school and she needs to learn to deal with THOSE people.

HMMM - we may be have gottin off track -

I agree with running a few " half court" sprints but also never understood the long running. I always say to the girls, this game is 60' at a time right? Then we will do a little bit of short sprints. We don't always run, I prefer to use my time coaching...

There are only a couple of times in fastpitch when you trot about at a medium pace. The longest distance you ever jog is 240' after a homerun. How many feet are in a mile?

Not only will it not help you play fastpitch better in any way, too much of it will also kill any strength gains you made in the off season.

Which one would you want in your dug out?

Not directed at anybody but in a nutshell this is youth sports today. What is so horrible about running long distances as part of practice? I don't do it because of time... But Patti Gasso who I assure you is not a "wreck" ball coach has her team complete a sprint level tri-Athlon. She said every year she has to teach Atleast one kid how to ride a bike... Yes a D1 college athlete that doesn't know how to ride a bike. The subject of sprints is really funny, in fastpitch speed clearly is important, to run fast you've got to run fast. Btw a lot of our youth are out of shape, running a mile before or after practice might be a good thing for their overall health. It has many health benefits and although softball generally outside of pitchers and catchers is not really an endurance game, the girls that play it are athletes right? And being in good physical condition in athletics helps.

Legs feeds the wolves boys.

IMHO, I think the pitchers and catchers need to run the long distances (unless a pitcher only uses the arm to pitch). They use the legs the most out of any of the girls on the team and the long distances not only build strength, but stamina to go double headers in the heat. I tell my younger dd the quote above all of the time. If she didn't run the long distances (1+ mile), she wouldn't have lasted last season as long as she did. She learned it and lived it.
