ok. So my dd comes home tonight from her workout with the high school team.... She informs me that while hitting off the tee she is told by one of the women "helping" that she should NOT have palm up/palm down on contact but instead should roll her hands at contact? Now this person telling her this coaches her own travel 16u team, and shes a JV coach @ another school, so I would assume she knows what shes talking about? My dd has always been taught palm up/down, so when she told me what this person was saying I was kinda taken back. Anyone teach rolling of the hands at contact? And before anyone comes and says I'm picking on a coach don't bother...... Should I just tell my dd to smile and let it go in one ear then out the other? Or am I crazy and this person is right.....no way shes right though.....right?

I firmly believe that there are multiple viewpoints on almost everything in this game: linear or rotational? Alligator-style fielding or hands side by side when fielding a ground ball. Step & drag vs leap (careful using this term) style pitching.
However....nowhere in this game should ANY batter be rolling their hands at or before contact.
I certainly don't consider myself as knowledgeable about the swing as maybe Tim Duncan or Howard (plugs for you guys), but I think I know enough about the mechanics of the swing to know that this person is flat out wrong.
Now...what to tell your DD? Therein lies the long-standing problem of an athlete playing for more than one coach at a time. In fact, this isn't even a problem of playing for more than one coach in a season...this problem could exist if she ONLY played for this team & she was being led by a coach with these beliefs.
So, how do you approach the coach? You certainly can't go directly to the coach & say "You're wrong", because DD will suffer. What do you do? Maybe find a way to get copies of some articles or something to describe effective hitting motions & see if you can gently get them into the coach's hands. It's a delicate process.
If one of my players' parents brought me a book showing a fielding technique that was different that what I teach, would I be offended? Sure...I would feel as though I don't have their confidence.

I am really looking forward to the input from some of the guys and gals who have more experience with this. How did they deal with it? Was it successful?
Bottom line....Larry......palm up/palm down at contact. All of the hitting gurus believe in this.
So do I...so do you.
So should this coach.
Good luck!

Welcome to HS ball. Though similar to travel ball in that theories and ideas vary, at least your travel team has a coach on site to answer for their views on technique...some of these open gym HS workouts do more harm than good.

Palm up, Palm down...never any wrist roll before...at...or after contact. Maybe after extension and during the follow thru.

Yeah, wait until she boots 1 grounder out of 18 or 20 hit her way and it's "Don't move your feet that way! Square up and wait on it!!!" Then after the next batter crosses 1st base while she's "squared up and waiting on it!!!!!!" her coach tells her "YOU'VE GOT TO CHARGE THE BALL!!!"

Buck up though and be happy. I'm told that playing at the school where you live and for whom ever they have coaching there is quite the thing to be doing though. She will raise the level of play of everyone around her. :lmao:

Lucky for my dd the woman that said this does not coach @ the school. Her dd plays for the team, and her husband has coached my dd in previous rec yrs for the past 3-4 yrs. He has always preached palm up/down, so I don't know why she would be saying roll the wrist? I thought it sounded crazy and I knew palm up/down was correct, just thought I'd get some opinions from some folks who know more about the game than I do. Thanks for the input.......

Wipe on...wipe off.

wipe on what you have been taught by your individual coach then wipe off all your ego playing High School ball.
Enjoy your time and hope you had fun playing for your school...like anywhere there are good and bad coaches.
Our school finally got a coach after my kids left (just one year of playing for him).

Like any sport and any level (rec, HS, travel, college) there are coaches who are good and bad, knowledgeable and uninformed, motivated and lazy. What drives me more crazy are the private skill instructors who teach bad skill and mechanics and get paid good money to do it.

Tell the "helper" that her cell phone is ringing - 1984 is calling...........

DD's HS coach actually teaches hands below the barrel, knob to the ball... Very OLD school. We approached him and explained that she has a pitching coach and a hitting coach. He said he wouldn't mess with her as long as she's hitting the ball. I went one step further as our organization had Duncan up for a clinic. I invited the HS coach to come to the clinic. He actually came AND he helped with the clinic. He will tell you he learned a lot and he's amazed with the way things have changed and said to me that the incoming freshmen will be taught Duncan's method v/s his old ways. Long story short, The most important communication is the crucial communication that you don't want to have. Talk to the coaches / instructors. I have girls on my team that I won't advise against their hitting coach. After all, not every method is for every girl and consistency is key to any sporting activity.

That would be great if this person would go to a hitting clinic put on by someone like Duncan. But alas..... she told my dd that palm up/down causes nothing but pop outs?

Smile, nod, and hit the tar out of the ball.

You could go thug and take the bat, hit her palm up/down and then hit her again rolling the wrists at contact. Ask her which one hurts more....
***Disclaimer*** this is an attempt at humor. Some on here have been known to have very little to zero humor or logic. In no way am I encouraging violence. lol

She must have meant roll the wrist at finish right and not at contact?

If she is talking about pop ups from palm up palm down she must also be teaching the bring hands down to ball and level your swing instead of hands up adjust barrel angle to ball?

Maybe she is a golfer. Hit down on the ball, roll your wrists on contact. watch that beautiful draw...

My suggestion is to have her smile and nod....but keep doing the proper hitting technique she was taught!

You hit the nail on the head. This is the advice I would give. Tim has always told my dd that you must protect your swing, go thru the drills your coach has you do, but you must hit on your own to protect your swing. Once they see you hitting the cr*p out of the ball they will not mess with the swing anymore.
