:-/ A small girl with a small hand---is it against any rules to take out to mound and use ?a rosin bag while pitching to help hold onto the ball? Or any ideas of how to help grip--already starting to use a squeeze ball to increase grip. Thanks

I believe that a rosin bag is legal in all organizations.

As far as the grip goes, you really don't want too tight of a grip while pitching. I tell my girls to treat it like an egg. If you squeeze too hard the natural tendency is for the thumb to stay on too long and result in a high pitch.

If her hands are too small to get the thumb in the middle, it is ok to slide it over to the side more. It will be a lot like a changeup grip.

Rosin is ok. It has to be rosin powder - not rosin rock...go figure. You might just scuff the ball you know!!

We played in tournament last year where our pitcher took a rosin bag to the mound in the first innings and when the inning was over she picked it up to bring it back to the dugout. The umpires made her leave it on the field for the remainder of the game incase both teams wanted to use it. That was a first.

I've heard that one before and it seems to be one of the lesser-known "rule myths" that pop up from time-to-time.

The first time this came up a few years ago, I looked for any rule that would require a pitcher to leave her rosin bag on the field for the other team to use. I never did find a rule, Point-of-Emphasis, Case Book play or interpretation that supports this.

ASA rules do note that when a pitcher is using a rosin bag, it must be kept on the ground back behind the pitching plate. But that only means when that pitcher is out there pitching! She can take it with her between innings. Maybe some umpires read this and think it means left on the ground "all the time".

NCAA rules make it clear that it is the responsibility of the pitcher using rosin to remove it from the field between each half-inning!

Maybe some other organization requires the bag to be left on the field all the time, but until somebody points me to that rule book I'm going to say that any umpire calling this is making stuff up!

:-?I believe products like gorilla gold and mighty grip do not fall under the category of 'rosin' or 'resin' (I've seen it spelled both ways referring to the same powder) and may be, indeed, illegal.
