2 outs, girl on 3rd base, 2 strikes on batter, pitcher throws pitch, batter swings at ball and ball strikes her in the hand, deflecting down 3rd base line, runner from 3rd comes home, batter runs to 1st base because of dropped 3rd strike, what is the proper ruling and why?

one more, girl on second base, steals third on pitch, catcher throws to 3rd but slips on the throw, the ball hits the 3rd base coach in the back, and ball deflects down left field line, runner comes home, no coaches box any where to be seen, whats the call? What if there were boxes clearly marked, does that make a difference? Had someone ask me these, thought they were pretty interesting scenarios. Been away from the game awhile, hard to remember all the little rules.

1) Anytime a pitch touches a batter the ball is immediately dead. Anytime the batter is hit by a pitch while offering at it, it is a strike. Put them together and you have a dead ball, a strike and, since this is strike three, the batter is out.

And, by the way, the hands are not part of the bat. They are part of the batter.

Proper ruling is...batter out, no runs can score, inning over...switch sides!

2) If a thrown ball accidentally hits a base coach, there is no penalty. Live ball, play on, get what you get.

If it is judged that the coach intentionally interfered, then the ball is dead and the runner closest to home is called out.

The coach's box defines where the coach has to be before the ball is pitched. After it's pitched or hit the coach is free to move anywhere to avoid the ball, direct runners, etc. Whether the coach is hit inside or outside of the box doesn't matter- only if the contact was intentional or not.

Thanks, what about the phrase, " the hand is part of the bat" foul ball? I think it is either the ball hits the hand, or it hits the bat, cant be both. Is that right or not?

The hands are never to be considered as part of the bat. They are always part of the batter. The umpire has to judge which one the ball hit first. It's impossible to have either a fair or foul ball after the pitch first hits the hands because you can't have a legally batted ball off of the batter.

If the coach is out of the box before the pitch, then the umpire should stop play and instruct him to get inside of it. There's no real penalty if the coach is out of the box before the pitch- unless maybe if the umpire has to repeatedly tell him to get in the box. That could possibly result in an ejection (I've never had it come to that point).

Layman's terms---- Ball hits the hands during a swing= a painful strike dead ball.
