It probably was instigated by the really poor umpiring on field 1 in the afternoon.

That guy was the worst. ?Poor technique, and biased pitch calling. ?His strike zone was impossible for the girls to adjust to, and he was guessing on plays at the bases.

I really believe that having the same umpires week after week breeds too much "familiarity" with some of the players, coaches and especially the pitchers. ?

There has to be more than 3 umpires willing to work at Spano on a Sunday. ?And there has to be some umps out there that are not intimidated by some of those coaches.

Or maybe it was an argument about pitchers who lost in the ?morning for one team pitching in the afternoon for a losers bracket team. ?That totally skewd the brackets.

How true!!! ??

You take a little bit of biased attitude, mix it with apparent blindness, throw in some inconsistency and you get "blue chaos" ??;D :-X

Some of those Sunday games were enough to drive you to drink.

Losers Bracket? I was under the assumption it was upper and lower bracket play.

Familiarity IS a good word - however, at the ages these young ladies have approached I don't know that you could find an umpire that hadn't worked games for these pitchers.

I agree that umpires are in a rough position - and as one umpire has stated before, you don't hear the winning team whine - BUT, without umpires the teams that do participate in the league wouldn't have the facility or means to take advantage of the off season for indoor practice.. truly the intention of some teams.

to: My Kid Pitches,

Well, your perspective is transparent from your screename.

The girls referred to it as the losers bracket all day. ?They are old enough that they don't want to be coddled.

Of course you don't hear the winning team whine, they are laughing at the losers, and counting their lucky stars. ?But a couple of them did mention they actually felt sorry for the victimized team.

And there is a big difference between having umped a player before, and seeing them every Sunday, and now calling them by first name.

And of course we have to have umps, or we are back to the coddling where we don't keep score and every kid gets a trophy. ?Maybe that is what you would prefer. ?But I am sure the college coaches will be keeping score. ?Remember many of these 18U's will be playing for them soon.

My point stands. ?There have to be more than 3 umps out there willing to work on Sunday. ?Then you are not putting them into that "rough" position you mentioned.

Well, I will not apologize for stand on things. Girls? Thought they were young ladies at this point - and if you knew my pitcher or anything but my screen name here, you would know I AM THE LAST PERSON to coddle them or any parent at this age.. BUT IN ANY EVENT....
The comment about the winning team whining - was passing along what had been said by another -- not myself.. so sorry if that was not clear and I also symapthize with those who have games taken from them with poor umpiring, we've ALL had our fair share of those circumstances.
I also agree with the fact that there MUST be more umpires, been asking about that all season - AGAIN, was repeating what I HAD BEEN TOLD by the powers that be.
I will make it clear that the suggestion I am for coddling and the other thoughts you'd had read into my post are way off base. I'm not the "newbie" you seem to have assumed I could be - nor am I sheltered about the real world of softball as it is today.
I appreciate your passion for the game and the good things these young ladies are accomplishing and I applaud your taking a stand.
I'm sure if ANYONE knows of umpires who are WILLING to fill the positions they have thrown their ideas into the ring and the best people to ask about that is the folks running the show. I'm sure the three who have been working on a consistent basis would like to sleep in occasionally.

Softball is a great game and I love being a part of it coaching or just watching girls play. However, you couldn't pay me enough money to umpire a game and take the abuse that an umpire is put through.

We'll have a higher number of talented umpires available when people stop trying to live their lives thru their daughters and teach them that the umpires have nothing to do with winning or losing a game. I have never seen an umpire declare the team with the lower score the winner, which would seem to be the only way they could 'steal' a game away from a team.

They are not perfect and I've seen them blow calls that I consider obvious. I doubt they do it on purpose. Blaming the umpires for losing or using their poor performance as justification for your own bad behavior is not what we should be teaching these girls. Teach them respect for the game, which includes respecting the umpire who is the authority figure on the field. It also includes winning with class and more importantly, losing with class (and no excuses). My daughters know very well that I better not ever see a verbal or non-verbal negative response to anything an umpire or official does.

You can only control 2 things on the softball field: how you play and how you act. You cannot control the umpires, the cheering from the other team, etc. so it should be ignored so you can keep your focus on what you can control.

dtrj,
? Absolutly one of the best posts I've ever seen on this forum.I am head coach of a 14u team and this is exactly the same thing we express to our players, I learned a long time ago that an umpire does not cost you a game. Very well put dtrj. 8) 8) 8)
