Scoring Question

Lil' help now....

The game is in the bottom of the last inning, two outs. ?If you get the third out, the game is over. ?However, there is an error to tie the game. ?The next batter is out. ? Technically, the game would have been over....but you gotta play another inning. ?Question: Are any runs scored after that point unearned or can they be counted as earned if no errors are committed after the point the game would have otherwise ended.

Just wondering......

Thanks in advance for any help. ?Everyone said JoeA would have the answer. ?Anybody else have an opinion? ?

Now that is a good question!

I couldn't find this exact scenario in the scoring guide I use (see link below). But, reading between the lines, it appears that once the last inning is over any runs scored in extra innings can be earned.

In other words, you go inning-by-inning and what happens in one inning has no bearing on what happens in subsequent innings.

That's my best guess- and another reason I'm glad that I'm an umpire and not a scorekeeper! ?:)

Bretman,

Thanks for your answer and the link. I was looking for this link myself.

I think you are correct, even if it is unfortunate for a pitcher who was throwing a good game and her legs give out in the extra inning.

I am still interested to see what some other OFCers think too.

The run to tie the game was unearned. Additionally, had any more runs been scored in that inning they too would have been unearned. Basically, the rule of thumb is for the scorekeeper to play the inning out in their head as though no error had occurred. In this case if the error had not occurred and the out was made instead the run (and any subsequent runs) wouldn't have scored.

All bets are off in the following innings, however. All subsequent innings are scored on their own merit as ERA is calculated by innings pitched (Earned Runs * 7 / Innings Pitched).

Good question but cshilt is right ... subsequent innings count on their own ... there can be earned runs scored ...

Not for High School ball but for Summer ball with the tie breaker, the runner that is put on 2nd base to start each 1/2 inning is the reponsibility of the "TEAM" and not an individual pitcher. ?I just wonder how many pitchers get hung with a possible unwarranted earned run and possible loss?
