Scoring Question

I hope I ask this right because I'm asking for someone else so bare with me.

Girl slaps to advance runner on 1st. Lead runner gets forced out at 2nd - batter safe at 1st.

Do you score the hitter as sacrifice or fielders choice?

Thanks!

Fielder's choice. In that instance whether the ball is slapped or hit has no real bearing.

Great question! It's not as straightforward as many believe and I learned something while looking it up.

Both the ATEC and NCAA scoring guides have provisions for including slaps. ATEC does so unconditionally and NCAA requires a "modification" by the slapper.

ATEC:
Score a sacrifice bunt
1. when with less than two outs, a batter advances one or more runners by bunting (include slap or slug bunting and running slaps), and is called out at first base or would have been out had no error occurred,

NCAA
SECTION 9 - SACRIFICE NOT CREDITED
No sacrifice is credited in the following situations:
14.9.3 When modifications are not made to the running slapper's swing or motion.
Notes:
1. Modifications could include, but are not limited to, the following: sacrifice motion, a controlled compact swing, a pause in the running slapper?s motion or a reduction of foot speed.
2. Scoring for the left-handed running slapper should be the same as for a traditional left- or right-handed batter. If the running slapper clearly shows the intent to advance a base runner, credit a sacrifice. If modifications are not made to the running slapper?s swing or motion, charge an at-bat, even if a base runner advances.

Unfortunately, it still wasn't a Sacrifice because the runner was not advanced.

Thanks SoCal Dad, I had to explain this to someone this weekend that the slap was a SAC. I had to pull out the ATEC, since I keep a copy with me. It is amazing how many keep the books , but never read the rules.
