Drop ball is by far my favorite; from the ground to my wrist to my jaw in the wink of eye. Ouch!!

I make my DD throw at 45 feet now - inside with low lighting is a killer - I too just love those Drop balls -- The transition though is great from fastballs to drops then my favorite -- The change-up -- LOL ;)

i bet those steel toed tennis shoes don't look too bad, but do you HAVE to wear the black socks with them?? come on guys....fashion up! lol
the drop ball must be the "one". my husband even gave the sign for it and KNEW it was coming...hit his big toe. lost the nail..but not after weeks, and i DO mean weeks...of whining about it. she finally told him to shut up or she'd do it again....lol men...we sure love you.
oh lets not bring up any of my embarassing stories shall we.....

Due to her school's colors my daughter has a lot of yellow shirts. That can be tricky in the early evening.

The back-up pitcher from Ohio State was home over the summer a couple of years ago and had agreed to show my 12 year old daughter how to throw some pitches. Everything was going fine until she asked if I could catch a couple as she wanted a target to throw to.
Now, as an un-coordinated man in his 50's I should have said "No way".... after all, my daughter could maybe hit 45 mph, which I could handle MOST of the time; but this girl was throwing in the 60's!
Foolishly, I acted macho and said "sure - no problem". I had no protective gear with me. Her first pitch was a drop that got me right in the shin. I did not cry (but wanted very badly to).

You know I waited for a week before I finally went to the hospital. I kept telling myself that this massive bruise would surely quit hurting "the next day". I finally figured that something must be broken in there! At the hospital they said it was just a very deep bruise and to give it a month. My wife said i got what I deserved ... that's what I get for playing around with girls.

My daughter was just clock at 58-59mph up at her HS. I am in the process of getting my Ohio HS Umpires Card. Needless to say the gear I use for Umpiring will now become my gear for catching my daughter. Up until now I have been lucky not to sustain any major injuries.

However my daughter has sent 2 other dads who asked to catcher her to the ER/Doctor. Broken bone in ankle, and a huge knot on the shin.

Also had a batting cage owner who used to be a catcher wanted to jump in and catch oldest dd.
After a drop deflected off his knee and a rise clip his ear he finally had enough. He kept refusing gear to wear.
Hate to say I told you so BUT!!!!!!!!!
Grandpa also one time stepped into the batters box to see what a pitch looked like coming in hard and fast.
dd brushes him back with a high fastball. No mercy.

I think that catching my daughter without gear is good for our relationship. I have learned to be more patient and less critical due to the fact that she is faster than she used to be and I am not...not to mention I am pretty sure there have been times when she intentionally drilled me to make a point. There is something about seeing your daughter smile when she is looking at the stitch marks in your shin/ankle that just brings a tear to your eye...literally.

I also think the pitchers get together and start a side pool on who can knock the dad/mom off the bucket first. The way they all laugh and high five when a dad/mom goes backward off the bucket is just not right.

Sit sideways and keep the glove in front of your face. Anything else will heal :)

When I read this thread yesterday I noticed that there are no Moms who catch their dds on this thread. ;D Must be because we are better catches! LOL

Well I got tagged in the face yesterday at pitching lessons! :'( Luckily for me it was just her wrist flips and not an actual pitch. Bump and little bruise resulted!

However, I now am not so pompous! It happens to us too!! ;)
