Should Spano Tournament be NSA NQ & Alt State?

Still not sure I understand the concept of a tournament being an "alternate state" tournament or why those exist other than to rake in more money for NSA.

However, aside from that, what is your opinion on the Spano Dome tournament being a national qualifier and "alternate state" tournament?

Personally, I can not understand how you can qualify for nationals playing games on a field that is far from regulation dimensions and distorted by special rules and offensive/defensive strategies due to those restricted dimensions. ?Thoughts?

I don't agree with the Spano being an alternate state, but, a qualifier yes. It may be indoors but I'll bet the teams that were in the finals would qualify outdoors just the same.

The teams are definite state qualifying caliber. As far as an alternate state, I don't think it should be just because of the tie breaking rules. I just don't think it seems fair.

I agree with anotherdad,I don't believe any indoor tourney that uses special rules should ba a qualifyer. Again that is just my view. I think to many people take indoor to serious.

We all complain about being forced to play at NSA States to keep our birth to the World Series so why not be happy that they give us an alternative. I for one am excited to skip Tealtown.

Dont think it matters much. Teams that qualify because of Spano's would more than likely qualifiy somewhere else during the season. I think as a qualifier it gets a more teams in too!

Tealtown:

1. Nowhere to warm up.
2. Pretty much out in the middle of nowhere.
3. Fields extremely dusty and not maintained much at all during the tournament.
4. Parking not great when crowded, although it's not horrible.
5. Used to be the case that some fields had a baseball mound on them, but I think that's been fixed.

Joe-

you forgot to mention the dugouts in the outfield ;)

States should be more centrally located --heck I'd even take Columbus, but the most SW corner of the state-- where not many teams play NSA on a regular basis??

I think that one of the big problems with the indoor tournament being an alternate state is that they are not offering an outdoor alternate state. That means that those teams who do not make it up to Spano are stuck with playing at Tealtown if they want to attend the NSA World Series. This means that they would have to miss a great tournament like GAPSS.

If they are going to make an indoor tournament with many unique rules an alternative to the state then they should make a few other alternatives as well.

Coach Tig: My gosh, how could I have forgotten the dugouts literally in the outfield? And as I recall, the infields are cut for slow pitch, with the outfielders barely playing on the grass.

I was more concerned that it wasn't psoted as an alternate state tourney soon enough. By the time I found out about it Wolfpack Best of the Best was full and I had to be at Teal Town if we wanted to do NSA World Series in our back yard.

we already dumped $475 into the Dome at Fort Wayne (nice place by the way)

On the other hand I think indoor ball is indoor ball. Its just not the same, youprobably don't have all your players and are borrowing a couple as well.

tealtown - Outback Chicken strips good- everything else is a pain. there aren't even hotels close. I tried to bid to host it this year in pickerington and by last august the "contract" was already signed for 2008. I told them I was interested in 09. But now we are hosting an ASA's NQ, so one tourney a summer is enough. Now if they let me do our fall qualifier as an alternate state... that would make sense.

We don't play much NSA and use the tourney as "Feb dirt" so I do not have a real vested interest in whether it is a NQ or alt state.

I agree that due to the dimensions it's not the same game but also agree that for the most part "the cream still rises to the top".

Perhaps the worst aspect of it to me is that two of the 5 championship games ended with the score tied and, based on a random statistic, 2 teams have qualified for Nationals. ?That just does not seem right. ?Especially considering that most teams have to score more runs (the whole essence of the game) than their opponent did to get their bids. ? ?;)

41Softball,

Joe pretty much nailed it. It always seemed strange that you win a birth and then have to atttend this tournament to keep your birth but if you do not have a birth and attend this tournament you are pretty much still in NSA if you ask nicely. In addition some teams have been excused if they are in Colorado that week, which is not an NSA tournament. Dont' get me wrong we would have gome if we had to but much happier that we can play at GAPSS

I agree with eagle1, I'm just a dad, but I'd much rather play GAPPS than go to States. This is what our team is doing since we played in the Spano Tourney last weekend. Once the girls get older, and we're a 14u team, it's important to play some showcase tourneys. It's too bad GAPPS and States are the same weekend. Glad we're playin GAPPS. I want my kid getting as much exposure as possible.
