Signs - which do you use?

Just curious - seems like signs fall into three categories:

1. Number system through touches or verbalized

2. The classic indicator and combination of touching body parts

3. The wrist bands

Just curious - what do folks do - I have my preference and am not asking you to reveal your actual signs but curious to see what is in favor right now.

Lol ... well since I'm the "wristband man", let me at least put in a vote for that. Just one clarification ... in the system I've used, the coach uses a 3 number system that could be verbalized, but which I personally prefer to just hold up my hand and give. I don't like to draw attention to either myself or to the numbers. Those numbers then are "translated" by the players using their wristbands. I had not thought of it before but, as John says, you could also touch body parts that could be translated as well, though my only issue with that is that invariably I would like scratch myself or something and confuse the players! :)

The thing with the wristbands is that the coach has several options of number combinations they can use for each signal and can alternate this all of the time, not to mention that you can also easily change out the cards every so often, including as much as every inning it you wanted to, making the signs impossible to steal. In my system, I give the coaches 3 different sets of signals upfront to work with. You can also buy the software/license to do this all yourself before each game, but in my research, I found it to be very expensive for the system and potentially the wristbands as well, and I don't think that most coaches will want to pay for or bother with that other than at perhaps a D1 college level.

I really think you're going to see the use of wristbands increase significantly over the next several years, much like it did in football. I've introduced the concept to a couple of high school coaches in the last year, and I know they will never go back to the old system. While it could happen in baseball as well, my sense is that a lot of coaches there will want to stay with the touching of body parts, as it's more traditional ... just my opinion ...

I first saw the wristband system 4 years ago when our HS baseball team started using it for the coach calling pitches. I agree baseball will be very slow to adopt it for offense.

A combination. I use a # system for defensive plays and body part touching for offensive signs.

I ordered the wristbands off of JB and used them for the first time this past weekend and they worked great...the girls easily understood them and we didn't have any missed signs in two games...I was pleased with the results for the first time out.

Wristbands are so easy and the girls love using them. We use them only for the catcher right now but could easily use them for the whole team.

Pluck is my favorite signal does that count?

It's not a sign. It's a nervous twitch. Everybody just thinks it's a sign. The pluck happens when hotdogs are nearby and coach is unable to sneak over to the concession stand to partake in the beefy tubular goodness that he so desires.

Snoman ... I don't see any reason that girls can't start using one as young as 10U. I would argue that it's easier for the girls to understand than a traditional signing system. I've sent out about a dozen systems so far ranging in age from 10-U to the community college level, though the majority are 12-U's and 14-U's. I've got feedback from about 1/2 of them and so far, so good!

We will be making the switch to the wristband system for offense and for pitching signals. I have heard nothing but positive feedback from everyone that uses it. Seems that everyone says that it is very easy for the players to to catch on, and easily changed with different sheets.

I have used the wristband system for 2 years now from high school to 10u. We use them for calling pitches, defense set up, and offensive signs. All ages totally understand what is going on and we don't miss signs anymore.
